For me the reason why I can ditch most of my spirit in a 10 man tank healing situation and rely mainly on cooldowns for mana is the group setup and trust in the healer/s beside you. Not that I slack much but I don't need to go crazy on my mana pool, my self and the Druid cross heal a lot, so over all the raid stays healthy and we pick up slack for each other when times are hard.

Because of this both of us can relax and use less mana intensive methods to keep everyone alive, it results in both of us having more mana and having a lesser requirement on spirit in general for most fights.

But with that said we tried baleroc heroic tonight single tank 2 healed and on one of our best tries to 35% both myself and the druid where spent on mana but the shard people failed anyways. If it was only me who had no mana left then I would agree it was due to my lack of spirit but the fact that both of us where on the same amount told me we where doing something wrong as a group.

A few tries later we got him to 35% and failed to the shard debuff again, but this time I solo tank healed till we wiped, I had 90 stacks of the heal buff the druid had 129 stacks and both of us where around 50% or more mana with cooldowns left over.

My point of this is when things go like clockwork healing is easier and in my raid group we tend to have things go right more often then not. So the amount of spirit I need is completely based on the group and at the moment I need very little.

For H rag progression spirit is important and throughput feels less important until your raid can do the fight perfectly. All the other fights you can get away with little spirit as possible

I usually tank heal and I reforge completely out of spirit. I am in mostly 378 gear and anything that has spirit I reforge out to crit/mastery. I still have DMC, so even with all the reforging I am sitting right at 2100 spirit w/ 5 stacks and I never need it. I am not doing HM FL, so my view may be skewed though.

Definately get a rapture tracking addon; it helped me a TON maximizing my disc regen.

I reforged everything into crit and mastery and completely neclect haste.

ATM Im on 2365 orso spirit, im mainly tank healing.
Timing Rapture and ur fine, i do think i can go slightly lower but were progressing on HM now so i rather keep it around this amount of spirit.
In T11 i also had around 2300 spirit and it always worked fine but back than we had a shammy healer that was more active (as in every raid) while he is now alot less active.

Kinda sad in a 10man guild as im now missing out on Mana Tide, its managable got 2xdruid and they op so were fine.
I still have a Spirit Proc trinket, Fall of Mortality.

I go along with ~2k spirit, reforging everything to crit mastery. Additional i am only gemming int.
At ilvl 387, there is no problem going onto rag 25hc progress doing tankheal/raidheal.
Bloodelf racial and shard of woe are much more worthy than spirit, in my opinion.

in my opinion you can reforge out of spirit as much as you want, as long as you can cope with mana.
bassically the higher ilvl (the higher intellect) the less spirit you need

I raid 25man and I can definitely say our healers "heal well together" for sure - 4 of us have been healing together for at least a year and we definitely understand each other and what we're capable of and what we can expect from each other. I love the synergy we have - as cheesy as that sounds.

I guess to make this post relevant, is I agree with CoolNitro - your group can have a big influence on how much spirit you need. I use much more mana and wish I had more spirit in mostPUG raids healing alongside mostPUG healers than I do with my group of buddies.

I generally hover around 2k spirit on my gear to maintain a decent natural mana regen. Disc mana management is super easy and my mana is rarely threatened, but I like that cushion during rough burn phases. I reforge out or opt for non-spirit pieces where appropriate. Usually when I reforge it's for Mastery. My haste is like, super high as it is between Darkness and natural haste bonuses.

You should really have no problem tank healing with a baseline of 1900-2000 spirit. Use your shields to proc rapture every so often, map Inner Focus to all your big heals via macro, use Power Infusion during heavy damage phases (or on cooldown). You're not specced for Atonement/Archangel, but consider trying it. It is a great way to recoup some mana and boost your throughput if you know the best times to use it.

Myself: 2200 spi, haste stacking AA/A.

My competition: 2600 spi, mst stacking SoS.

In theory I should be able to out-dump Dosia because of higher overall efficiency/more mana return/haste stacking, but in practice I've only pulled it off in one worthwhile parse. She outheals me almost every time because she plays far more aggressively than I do. Bubbles more often than the rapture timer (and this is really fine with mst stacked), keeps high activity time where I would favor a little idling. Bigger aegis offsets overhealing from being more aggressive.

How much spirit you need comes down to how you play and how you spec/reforge. 3000+ is a red flag, but anything between 1800-2800 might be valid.

While this is true, don't gimp yourself to only tankhealing. A tank healing disc still wants a significant amount of PoH; 1900 is too low for almost everyone, even a tank healer supporting raidheals. On WoL I only found a few top parses with <2000 spirit (a month ago when I was studying this). They were all mastery stacked and had nearly perfect rapture timing (~1 per 14 seconds after some slop, very few extra shields). None of them were tank healing.

I remember at around 1800 spirit I started feeling the pinch for mana but then as I dropped lower I didn't notice it getting worse it could have been due to me learning how to be more conserving with my mana or that as I gained more other stats I generally didn't need to heal as much to get people stable.

At the end of the day the lower the spirit you are able to run with the more of your main stats you can take which basically evens out your lack of mana with more powerful spells, so why stick on a safe number.

These two logs are Shannox and LR heroic 10, for Shannox I mainly tank healed the dog tank and LR where I mainly aoe healed, mana is not an issue on both those fights and tbh I do track rapture but I hardly ever get the most from it.

They are not exactly top tier logs but they show what kind of healing I can do with 1200 spirit as a reference.

As a 10m tank healer I have reforged away from spirit on every piece, only fight I run low on mana is Hc Beth'tilac.

I played about with some reforges to see what stats I would have when I took back the spirit and refored other secondary stats and it really was not worth it, losing about 500 haste and mastery was too painful.

Getting an addon to track your rapture CD will work wonders on your mana regen.

I play disc with 2.7k Spirit, it's an alt raiding normal FL but we might start heroics soon, would you say this is too much spirit?

I reforged out of it a bit because I found I was ending up with a lot of mana and I wanted a bit more throughput. I think i'm a bit over 1900 spirit.

  15. #35
i find it quite nice with extra spirit i have 3kish spirit and i dont have to worrie to much if i have use a mana ineffective spell. for mana regen i use rupture, fiend, hymn and archangle

have tested different haste builds but for disco (10man raids) i found that 976ish is quite ok.

Actually could a few of you guys/girls with really high / low spirit post some logs please, I want to see how much more you are casting then my self and what kind of actual output you are able to do. If possible a 10 man shannox or LR heroic log since they are the first bosses and the most straight up in terms of healing.

    CoolNitro : Tank healer : 1200 spirit : logs; Shannox & LR, heroic 10.

I am hoping that with a few references we can narrow down which side of the scale is better and it should help answer the question of reforging out of spirit.

I can provide some logs, but these are alt runs where the other healers are badly geared and inexperienced, so the majority of the time I'm not specifically a tank/raid healer (except on Rag, where I just heal tanks)
I currently have 2.7k Spirit, and here are some logs.

I have noticed if you manage your Rapture.. you can actually come out of a fight with a lot of mana left. Rapture is the KEY!

i raid heal (16,17k hps) 25H with olmost 3000 spirit and sometime im still short on mana.

so i really have a hard time believing you guy's.

am i the only 1 in this ? or do i just heal wrong :S. i do use GH and PoH alot
You are doing something wrong that for sure... I reforged my spirit down to about 1900 and i could go even lower if i wanted and i never have mana issues. I'm running with shitloads of haste aswell and still no issues. If you r having mana issues you r either not using your cd's correctly or you tracking of rapture is shite.

We 2 heal every encounter with 6/7 hc and mana has never been an issue
