Talk about nerdfest.
I love how people call gamers anti-social, yet at these types of events everyone mingles (at least in my experience)...
You don't see 'normal' people in the queue at tesco chatting do ya...
live like 10 mins walk from a massive supermarket which is 24/7 but ive never been to a midnight launch. i might for skyward sword though.. can pick up some krispy kreme's while im there. awesome.
Whilst they can certainly be fun, usually the biting cold and queuing up puts me off. I can definitely see the appeal, but I'd rather just grab the game during normal hours and then sit at home and play it.
I've only ever gone for WoW releases (with the exception of Starcraft 2, and that was because I wanted a CE which I hadn't pre-ordered), which has landed me a fair few posters and t-shirts by now
I personally go for the social occassion, to meet up with other local WoW gamers and share memories of the past expansion.
Edit: IIRC the best one was BC launch, since I met a guildie, whose girlfriend was kind enough to do the shuttle between Gamestop and the local 7/11, bringing hot coffee for us (this was in the middle of January, so absolutely freezing). And being one of the first in the queue meant having to walk past the looong line with my CE box held high

I've been to all WoW midnight launches so far, but not for any single player games.
The night is dark and full of terrors...
I actually just happened to be driving pass a Gamestop at midnight when Dark Souls came out so I went to pick it up. Most of the people their didn't fit the image of stereotypical "nerdy gamer". Mythbusted
I don't live in an area that has any large midnight launches, so if I ever went, it'd just be so I could play until midnight the next day while being loaded on Mountain Dew. Although, the day before Wrath came out, at around 8 at night, I was driving past Best Buy and I saw a quite large line of people waiting.
Me and a couple of friends always go to midnight releases for the fun and the hype. Its the one time I actually feel really nerdy, but I like it.
There's midnight releases for everything these days so it's just part of the experience
I did before I moved for my job. Not having a couple people to show up with makes it weird and not as fun. Meh. Yes I have, will I again? Probably not.
I used to work in GAME many moons ago, I worked the MW2 release.. and it was mostly mouthbreathers. there was NO social interaction with other people in the line. just the people they came with. they shifted in, got their copies and left.
Im a gamer, I 'get' midnight launches, but lets not pretend its all a big party all the time. gamers ARE socially awkward more often then not.
I've been to a couple of midnight launches, go with a couple of mates, some beers and get there an hour or so before hand. Get a bit drunk and turn it into a night
I've been to the midnight release's of Burning Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King, and Cataclysm (the two latter with my friend). The event's themselves are a awesome place to meet players in your area and to socialize with them. You can also score freebies by attending the release party... for example during Wrath's release me and my friend left GameStop with two WoW TCG decks, and a WoW Miniature Game Starter Kit for free. During Cataclysm's release we scored free pizza from Little Caesars next door to GS.
