PC keeps shutting off randomly, need help.

I've recently have had problems with my computer just randomly shutting off. I know my ram, hdd, cpu, gfx cards are all fine. I'm just skeptical if it's my motherboard or my power supply unit. It started shutting off after BF3 came out, and I've been playing it like crazy. I assume it's something with BF3, as in it's using practically all of my resources just to run the game.

Anyone ever encounter this problem before or something similar?

    Will post specs if needed.

You need to link specs mate.

Power Supply probably, can't deliver the power needed for your GPU etc. Had the same problem a few months ago.

Is it randomly shutting off or doing it mostly/always when playing BF3?

Might be worth keeping an eye on your CPU/GPU temperatures if it is doing it only when running something intensive.

Also have a look for messages in event viewer at the time it is happening.

Beat me to it. Sounds like it's overheating. You'll want to download a temperature monitor.

How hot is the graphics card running?

Might be worth looking in the event log to see if a program or something is causing it, although it sounds more like a hardware issue.

I posted it, I forgot to add it so I edited it. Sorry!

Most likely overheating. I have the same problem with my graphic card since the fan on it stopped spinning :/

I know the Tj. Max on my CPU is 70c. It hasn't came close to that yet. I don't know the limit for my video cards temperature though.

Temperatures seem fine. Is it shutting off or restarting? Any blue screens? Error messages during boot/start up following a crash?

It shuts off then starts itself back up, BUT it stutters. Like it shuts off then starts back up, then 2 seconds later it shuts off again and tries to starts up then just shuts down for a couple of minutes. Then it starts up just fine.

A couple of times so far when it shuts itself off, it says the OC switch on my Mobo has failed, and to lower the frequency. So I lowered it, and then it still shuts off.

    check fans
    check power supply.

Fans are all running fine, don't know how to check if it's the power supply not being able to resource my pc when it's under an intense load though.

Personally I'm leaning towards overheating again, though I'm not really sure what.

Actually, it could be the PSU. Your GPU/CPU both require about 450W, running at full capacity your current PSU may not be able to handle it.

Those temps are nothing out of ordinary when running a game like BF3, Is it powering down completely or just rebooting?

If the latter i'd suggest noting the next time it happens then powering back on and investigating the Event Viewer logs for the culprit.. I'd be willing to be it's a driver issue if it's randomly rebooting during gameplay.

Whoa, that's some weird issue there, either your power supply fails or something messed up the BIOS.

    1. Try running BF3 on lower settings
    2. Update drivers (if recently updated before it started failing, roll back)
    3. Default BIOS

i had a similiar problem once, but its too far back. but if i remember correctly i bought a new power supply and that worked.

the power supply i had before was brand new but it might have had an production error or got damaged on transport, i dunno.
