    Question i3 2100 vs Macbook pro i7

Would the i3 2100 Desktop be better than a i7 from a Macbook Pro 2010 for gaming? (Mostly Rift!)

It would, yes. Mostly related to GPU, but even one of the best readily availible (GTX560M) mobile GPU compares to the GTS450 at best. And then mobile GPUs of gaming quality isn't availible for macbooks.

MBPs have its uses, but gaming is not it.

Go for desktop, you'll thank us later. :P /hail fellow Rift player! I can tell you I have the graphic settings in Rift set fairly high and I see gorgeous fps ranging typically from 40-60, and to put it simply: Rift needs to be experienced at higher graphics than a MBP could power, and also at a higher res/larger monitor, it just looks amazing.

i like the screens on macs but i hate mac os so if u use mac hardware and put windows u'll be better off.

as an A+ techie what i can tell you is this....while mac maybe a tad better get Microsoft stuff simply because it is easier to swap things in/out and upgrading macs is very difficult and impratical so if u want to make your pc last get microsoft because you can make it last longer with part upgrades

The 2010 MBP uses the 'fake' i7 series, and is a previous generation architecture. On top of that, its a Laptop processor. It doesn't get outperformed, it gets annihilated.

    Define "fake" i7 series processor.
2010 MacBook Pro doesn't use any "faker" i7 than the newest models.
Sure Nehalem based processors might be older and inferior to Sandy Bridge based processors but it doesn't make them any "faker".

The first generation of mobile i7 processors were defined by the Clarksfield architecture (which had solely i7 and extreme class processors) - not Arrandale, which is what the MBP i7 uses. The Clarksfield is significantly faster than Arrandale, and the 'fake' i7s only perform a small clock upgrade over the i5s (All Arrandale) from the same generation.

Good choice! And I see your rig in progress in your sig, I suggest a different PSU and if you can afford it a better GPU, but if you're playing on a smaller res or simply can't afford it the 460 should work fine for ya.

Thanks a lot! Well I already have the PSU, and I read some nice review on it! Hopefully it was a good buy! :/

Absolutely nothing in my mind. I can tell you though that quite a few on these forums disagree with me.
