I don't even... there should be no "what if" in jurisprudence. What if you murder someone in the future? Should we save the life of your potential victim by putting you in jail?

P.S. Also I'd rather them watching than doing. inb4 child porn makers! - new child porn is not required. Existing is enough for that.

Honestly, the place he was buying or getting the child porn from was probably getting it from somewhere else as well, and so on and so forth. They will never be able to track down those responsible for such deeds which is why they are trying to secure the internet as it is. (Good Idea =/= Good Outcome) Anyways, he won't be in prison forever so maybe next time he will think about his actions before being so hasty in his decision to purchase the child pornography. Also, to those who think watching it is harmless, that is what makes someone want to do it themselves and makes their urges more intense.

I think every little bit helps personally.
I don't think so. I mean people are gonna keep doing what they want, let's see if I can get an exampel... Ok if you someone get's arrested for piracy do you think that would stop me from downloading out of fear? I can say "no it wouldn't" . Granted this is not on the scale of childporn but I hope this analogy isn't too far of a stretch. This is nothing more then my opinion though, maybe you're right and it will stop more and more from consuming it and production will be hurt from it but I... doub it :S.

You do realize they do not just watch it - they masturbate, right?

You can also use that argument against normal heterosexual men who watch porn - it makes them want to do it themselves and makes their urges more intense, so they go and rape, right? No, they masturbate and then feel sexually neutral for the rest of the day or next porn session, depends on schedule.

No, I do not believe that them watching childporn is going to increase their drive to go rape children. And I do not think people playing GTA is gonna get an increase in urge to go out, steal a car and drive over people walking on the sidewalks (Because that's what I always did when playing ).

Don't get me wrong, I think he's fucking disgusting but the only one that should serve jailtime is the ones responsible for the creation of said childporn.
Arresting this man will serve as nothing but feeding the ignorant, as in this thread, thinking that this sick fuck should be behind bars. Why? He has never hurt any child right? If he has then that's another story. And I don't want to hear any shit about him indirectly hurting the children with his support of childporn. Really? Ok, maybe he is supporting it at a small scale
but it's sooooo insignificant and arresting this man won't do jackshit to stop the production of it.
The only way it could be legalised is if there was HARD EVIDENCE that allowing these people to watch child porn would reduce the chance of them trying to do things with actual children. Then it would be acceptable, but since that evidence doesn't exist, nope. Ultimately the top priority should be protecting children.

If anything there's more evidence that the more you watch things like that the more likely you are to try and take it a step further. Therefore we are protecting children by arresting people who watch things like this. It really is that simple. In a parallel universe where child porn keeps the pedofiles sated and stops them offending then sure, legalise CGI child porn and whatever. But not in this universe, because it won't work.

There are a lot of things wrong with how we approach the problem of pedophilia and such in the world today. But giving them child porn and saying "have fun!" is NOT the answer. It won't protect children, quite the opposite in fact. We should be focused on protecting children, not on just taking the lazy option and saying "screw this, let's just let them do what they want until they hurt a child". What we need to do is encourage pedofiles to get help immediately rather than treating them like monsters. But that also means we need to reinforce the point that viewing child porn is wrong.

Get real here. Playing a violent video game is not the same as masturbating to child porn. When you start masturbating to killing prostitutes in GTA then yes, I would say you DO have a problem. The act of masturbating to something only makes you find that thing more arousing. What do you think happens when a person continually does that? It's the same with pretty much any fetish or whatever, except every other fetish is consensual so I don't really care what they do with their partner in the privacy of their own home.

This is a good point really. I've actually read on a different message board a big discussion on how they should give pedofiles a crapload of loli just so they're satisfied and don't feel the urge to act upon their urges. Whilst I'm not sure if I would agree with something like that it does raise some questions.

At the end I think you and I are gonna have to settle with disagreement. I do see, as my exampel in the game, of taking life to be equal to or worse then ones depraved sexuallity. The base I can give is that the game is fiction and the porn is real, but since I'm focusing on the viewer of the porn that is sort of irrelevant.
I do see where you are coming from and I agree, the focus should be on protecting the children. I just think this is an inefficient way of going about it.

There's a clear difference between playing a game and masturbating to something you find sexually arousing. There really is no comparison. At all. When you play a computer game you know it's not real. The difference between a computer game and the real world is that real people have real feelings. Noone really cares if they kill a pixelated character, unless they're pretending it's a real person. There's nothing wrong with killing a pixelated person because they have no feelings. Their non existent family has no feelings, their non existent friends have no feelings. Because they're just pixels.

Think about when you watch normal porn. Have you ever imagined doing some of the things in the videos? Now think about how a pedofile feels when he/she watches child porn. Every time they "watch" it they are fantasizing about doing the things in the video/pictures. If they've been doing that for 2 years and suddenly a job at a school or a church comes up, what do you think will happen?

As far as I'm aware most people and organizations involved with this kind of thing accept that viewing child porn fuels a pedophiles desires. It doesn't keep them quiet, it makes it worse. What you believe has not been proved by anyone. It's not ok to believe something just because. If it hasn't been proven then it's pretty simple that legalising child porn would be wrong.

I don't know. I think it's an interesting discussion as to what you can legislate. As intrinsically wrong as the depicted topics are, I'd think that animated stuff is just.. animated stuff. Wouldn't it mean that it'd also be illegal to depict any other crime?

Oh, definitely. In much the same was as playing GTA has led me to killing hookers; owning a car has led me to ramraiding shopfronts; going out for a walk at night has led to me running marathons, and also being a vampire; taking my clothes off for bed has led to me becoming a nudist; so shall liking loli lead to child molestation.

    Or not, you know.

My whole point was that arresting this man would have little impact. I would love if you could show me some proof that arresting people who watch this kinda of stuff has a big impact on the production. And no, I don't want to legalise it. I never said that. I think it's silly to arrest a viewer. I do think production should remain illegal and without production, consumers wouldn't exist. By now you must be asking yourself "Isn't this guy contradicting himself?". Well yes, alittle, but I hope you can understand when I say: I do not believe that arresting viewers has a significant impact. Guess what, I find it ok if you try to prove me wrong and I want that since I would rejoice if we could actually work against such a horrible thing.
On a sidenote, I think people are entitled to believe whatever the fuck the want. It's when they preech it to others as FACT that it's unacceptable. I'm mearly stating opinion. You can't control what other people think.

So what you're saying is a normal man could sometimes have consensual sex with their of-age colleagues or students?

And you're comparing it to having sex with a child? What?

Just what? I fail to understand the point you're making. The only thing I can think of is the scenario of a college professor having sex with a student. If the student is of age there is nothing wrong with the act of sex itself, but obviously the college won't be happy about it and has the right to fire the professor it it wants. If you have an issue with that then get the rules changed, I don't really care either way in all honesty. And again, it is NOWHERE NEAR the same as what a pedofile will do in a situation with vulnerable kids.

As I said, viewing and masturbating to child porn fuels their paraphilia and makes them more likely to try taking advantage of a real kid. That is why it is illegal. That is why even viewing it is illegal. I made no mention of curbing production levels. Reducing production is something I have no real solution for. In the era of the internet and globalisation it's difficult to see how it can be reduced. The point is people who watch it need to be put somewhere safe so that they don't hurt a child.

It's illegal to possess it, yes so he is doing something wrong. Plus he's keeping those sick f*cks in business by purchasing it in the first place. He's helping those who exploit children by purchasing this material, how can you not see that?
    Whats a loli picture?

    Couple of points:
-It's not well known but a lot of the people that produce child porn show animated child porn (loli stuff etc) to their victims in order to condition them and make it seem like it's okay. If you ask why they don't just show kids images/videos of real CP then note that animated stuff usually shows the kids enjoying it and sometimes even initiating it. You can think of it like peer pressure to children that are very impressionable - "see they like it so it's perfectly normal" and goes on from there. I'm not saying anime CP is *as bad* as the real thing, however it's not as innocent/harmless as a lot of people think. If it was simply used as a form of catharsis then there would be less objections to it I'm sure.

-I'm glad people in this thread have already pointed out that being a consumer of CP is not okay, since it's an incentive for people to make more. Sure there are people that would abuse children no matter if there was an audience or not, but that the audience exists makes it seem acceptable for the abusers - it makes them feel like they're simply an oppressed minority who just happen to have a fetish rather than a bunch of criminals.

-Being attracted to children is completely different to being into, say, leather or amputees etc. The difference is that the focus of your attraction is incapable of consent and that makes a huge difference. Young kids are simply not mentally able to understand what is occurring to them and taking advantage of someone in that state is a horrible thing to do. No she's not 'mature for her age', you're projecting. People also argue that it was completely normal during Roman times but then again so was slavery and of you look elsewhere/further back so was ritual sacrifice.

-At the same time, people have a massive negative reaction towards child abusers (understandably) but the thing is that makes it very difficult for people who know they have a problem to seek help. They know that if they came out they would just be scorned instead of actually given the assistance they need and this forces them to remain underground and continue feeding their addiction in the only way they know how. It is going to be tremendously difficult to change the stance on paedophiles from 'if you see one, lynch them' to 'promote and spread the idea that paedophilia is wrong but they should be helped if they request it', since the idea of someone preying on their children brings out violence in just about anyone.

Loli = Lolita, another word for young person/child. Generally associated with young girls in Japanese Anime, and more specifically young girls in Hentai (Anime porn).
