    [Music] Depressing music?

"The song is an old Ukrainian Folk Lullaby called Sleep Is Tiptoeing About (Hodyt' son kolo vikon)" < inside the video description

when one looks at what happened during and after the Chernobyl disaster, and listens to this music being played on an abandoned untuned piano, knowing that it used to be a children's lullaby... it was overwhelmingly depressing for me.

what do you think? what do you feel?

do you know any other pieces of music that carry this much (non fictional) sorrow?
"The instinct of self-preservation? You call it that. Yes, i will sink my teeth into life. Fuck your evolution. Let other species wait their turn. I'm not a lamb being led to the slaughter."

Here's a good one. Not a tearjerker like Hurt, but depressing nontheless.

We will stand above the city, rising high above the streets
From tops of buildings we will look, at all that lies beneath our feet
We will raise our hands above us, cold steel shining in the sun
With these hands that will not bleed, my father's battle will be won!

This is the 1982 version of that song, a little more upbeat .. but hey add the 80's to any song and you can dance to it (and smile).

I love that album. I think this song is more depressing:

Saying that a song is depressing is, to me, a dodgy thing. What is depressing? I know "happy" songs with lyrics that can sink you down to the bottom, but is that depressing music? For me, The Remembrance Ballad from Atreyu doesn't even touch the outer rim of depressing music. If he's singing with feeling, he's not transmitting it. I've listened to similar music before so it's not the genre, it's his singing.

For me, depressing music has to be like a thick blanket that covers the very soul of your inner being. Anything remotely fast is excluded. Fast is energy, depressing music is meant to hammer you down into the ground like that dead corpse you are. You should feel the thick, heavy weight on your shoulders as it pushes its way into your eardrums, filling every little space in your head.

This is one of the very few depressing metal songs that I have heard. Here you can easily hear that sluggish, dragging, heavy feeling that just places itself on your shoulders, dragging you down. When his screams come in later, you can hear the pain behind is voice, amplifying the song even further.

Here is another one and the theme continues. That slow, heavy coat sinking in. It's beautiful, yet so sad and heartbreaking.

This one is slightly more just beautiful rather than depressing, but it still qualifies.

Depressing music at one of its finer points.

I think those three at least sum up the basis of depressing music for me.

This song makes me depressed sometimes. I guess it depends on the mood i'm in before i turn it on. Sometimes, it's just plain relaxing. Real weird.
