Looking for help on what to buy (new desktop)

Hey all, first time poster in this section.

I've seen over time that there is a lot of people who help with figuring out what to get for a new build. My younger brother has indicated that he wants a new computer for Christmas. He knows how to put one together and I'm the guy with the checkbook so I'm wondering what's the best setup for a desktop for around 1000-1500$. Or say what would be the best setup for running Diablo 3 Rift WoW etc on ultra settings. I've seen the threads about the black friday sales, but all of this is foreign to me so I would love some suggestion on steering me on the right path.

I don't think spending more than 400$ on gpu is a good thing in the long run so i recomended the gtx 570 just because you had the budget. You can surely save a lot of money on it if your brother isnt playing any GPU intensive games (Eg: BF3)

Thanks so much! Yeah my brother usually just plays fps for his 360. This will be just for his mmo/diablo3 fix. Appreciate the response

U can go with this options then(from better to worst[or similar]):
gtx 560 ti(still runs the latest fps games)
HD6950(still runs the latest fps games)
gtx 560(will run most mmo's w/o any probs)
HD6870(will run most mmo's w/o any probs)
HD6850(will run most mmo's w/o any probs)
gtx 460(will run most mmo's w/o any probs)

vilaca pretty much nailed it, I'd suggest get a 7200RPM HDD rather than an SSD, those are a luxury, and unless you feel like splurging, not needed.

You could probably downgrade the GPU to GTX560Ti if you really wanted to, also.

I suggested a SSD do to the price the HDD are atm cuz of the floods. its a good investment and noticeble. altho im with you its a luxury
