Getting myself a new Headset, what to get?

I have been thinking for a while now to get myself a new headset, but i have always delayed it since i dislike them in general.(to many times i have not heard that i had someone knocking at my door and i feel unaware what is going on around me while using them)

So my question is, what is most recomended if i want to hear what is going on around me while gaming, without missing doorbells and phonecalls etc?

Sorry if this have been asked before.
    I'm a stranger, I'm a changer.
    And I'm danger... maybe...

You'll want a set of open-back(open-air) headphones, or headset. The only open-back headset I've owned is the Steelseries 5h's. They are actually pretty nice, very lightweight, fits over your ears, retractable mic, and can be worn for hours. They easily let you hear whats going on the out-side.

These days I love headphones like the Audio Technica ATH-m50s for the audiophile in me, amazing sound. I just use a desktop mic.
