Well Cata sold 3.3 million copies within the 24 hour period, so it's the fastest selling PC game ever. If SWTOR beats that then I'll be impressed, but it's still far from a "wowkiller". The only thing that can kill WoW is Blizzard themselves.... which I guess they're on the right track.

I'm not a wow lover. But where did you pull these numbers from? Wow was not a hyped game wow created the hype for other games. to clone it. Because it was so good. Wow is not in its prime right now. Prime would have been Wotlk. And 800,000 players is not 24% of wow current subscription.
If 45 minute server ques are any indication, it is very popular.
I am going to predict that this game will be above 4 million by the end of January. The real test is whether they can deliver on end game in a way to make us forget WoW. Delivering end game will be a challenge. If we go through this leveling only to have end game land with a thud, then the game will take a major hit. If end-game is fun and challenging. The game will have legs and will keep most of the people who try it and like it.
There is no monster that will destroy World of Warcraft or Blizzard. They will be rich and remain that was for years and years to come and will go down as legends in there own right (a well deserved right too). Hell our kids might even have the honor to clear there shoes one day. But what matters is I played WoW and left it. Really that is all that matters for me and what you do is really all that should matter to you. In fact I think competition for both games is fantastic and nothing would be better then the two try to square off and battle it out for the top stop because that means they are putting money, time, and effort into the game. At least more then they would. I think WoW is a great example of if you sit at the top to long without some motivation you start to get fatter and lazier. It doesn't mean you are less of a person it only means that your slower to jog with and not as fun in bed as you used to be. It is part of getting old and that is pretty much what WoW is. If you still have fun with it great. If you don't duce it. If you like to pay and play both good for you. Just make the choice that is right with you.
I think before it is all said and done SWtoR will only have to prove its end game to people. If it proves to be as exciting as it could be and new content comes out at a good health pace then you will really see it take off. Maybe even a direct competition model to WoW. If not it will get Rift'ed. That is pretty much all it boils down too. If it does that it will end up being a 3-5 million sub game. If it doesn't then it will be a 500,000 to 1.5 million game.
Aion could have up to 5 hour queues when it was released, that did not mean much though after being out for a month or so here in the west.
Saying if the game is popular or not is kind of a weird question, star wars as it's own IP is very popular, albeit it's stagnated a lot with the latest film releases and georges general butchering of the franchise, if swotor is popular, I'd say yes atm it is, but i'd more call it pre-release hype then "popular", if it's truly a popular game we can only judge after a few months of it being out or not, as it is right now, it's a hyped game.
As a wow/blizz supporter I had enough interest to get into swtor early release and try it out though I did not follow it religiously like alot of people on these forums and I can honestly say after playing it alot this weekend....
It will not be the long awaited "wow killer" but if you give it a chance and get past the start area where the world opens up....yeah it will definitly give wow a good shot in the gut. If they allow addon support it could definitly tie wow for playerbase size.
I believe there were close to 2 million preorders, and that was end of nov, so i think they should be past the 2m mark by now, and ofc there are also plenty of people who will buy the game in the stores
I mentioned server ques, because we are talking about pre-release, 300+ ques and over a 100 servers at pre-launch. I suspect they are planning to haul out a bunch of new servers at launch, and will slowly expand the amount of people that each server can handle.
From the people who are playing the game, you will not hear many complaints. It is an MMO. With that style of game you have certain characteristics that are different from a single player, shooter, or other style, meaning it isn't for everyone. With that said, if you like MMO's in general, you will like this game. If you like Star Wars, you will probably like this game also. Feels very much like vanilla wow at the moment.
I am not suggesting that TOR is a WoW beater. Time will tell. They are basically the same game. TOR has 7 years of development and has had a really smooth launch. The leveling experience so far has been great in my opinion. I enjoy it. End game level 50 content will be the key. What is there to do when I have seen all the planets and done all the encounters?

For that to be true:
1. SWTOR would have to maintain 2.5 Million Subs for an extended period of time. One Year would be a fair time period since it would cross over MOP release. If they truly stole subs, they will not go back to WOW
2. WOW's 1st Quarter Report would have to show 7.5 Million Subs, to substantiate that SWTOR truely stole subs, and people simply did not sub to both games
The 2000 people that sit in the 4 hour queue for my server all seem to really want to play. Guess it's pretty popular.

Says they'll need 500k subs a month to stay profitable, which they will easily hit. They've already made the 80 million back just from preorders most likely.
