This isn't the future. This is simply a rich person who made a poor and foolish decision, there will always and has always been people willing to buy their way to the top. Video games are just a relatively new medium in which people can buy their way to the top.

To be honest, I've seen some rather ridiculous purchases in the name of art and decor, or collectors items..... so I guess it's not that bad I work in a rather specialist area of the pet industry, and I have seen people spend 50k on a hatchling snake without blinking.... which some people would think is unbelieveable but not that rare for me to see.

Doesn't really offer much detail or validation though so hard to tell if it's accurate, 16k on a sword on a game that's not even been released yet seems a little foolish to say the least.

Another MMO recently sold a few of it's spaceships for ~5k a pop. They sold quite a few too. I also see players with $200-400 worth of gear and $150 mounts in some F2P cash shop MMOs.

    Nothing new really.

Meh, back in the EQ days, a chinese man bought a full Rubicite set for $1,000,000. Lucky seller.

On topic tho, no, this isn't the future, and certain people with an obsession and loads of money will always get what they want.

Its going to be something gamebreaking like what the sword of a thousand truths could have been

I think Second Life is also a 'game' in which some people spend thousands on too.

In my opinion, it's sad to spend THOUSANDS.

    1. Chinese people are really into their folklore even young kids know so much about it other Countries can only can only dream about that.
    2. It's an Important part of the chinese culture to show what you got, thats the way its handled over there.
    3. If he can spend so much on this virtual good, i dont see the point of people complain about it. Im pretty sure many would do things like this if they had enough money
    4. No its not the "future" its already present... Cash shops for ingame goods etc.

Except that the sword has unique art, and that is it. It has no better stats or whatever it's just a fancy looking weapon.
