Someone find me some cheap but reliable ram ...

For an Asus P5Q-PRO motherboard. I want to stick 8GB on it - cost is a factor so it can't be too expensive, but at the same time I don't want bargain basement quality.

    I currently have: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/141930 (http://www.ocztechnology.com/ocz-ddr...ition-eol.html)

Any suggestions are appreciated, if you link to any online retailers, try and make them UK based, as I am UK based

Didn't realise that I could put up to 16GB in it! so yeah, 16GB.

Price-wise, seems good. Didn't realise I could install 16GB, I was stuck with the idea that it could take a maximum of 8GB without ever checking to be sure.

800MHz RAM is still available, but this is the only 1066MHz DDR2 I could find from the usual UK online stores. No clue about quality though. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Komputerbay-...6013789&sr=1-1

You should put some serious thought into getting Ivy Bridge board+cpu+ram this coming summer, and stop the expensive life support on old junk.

It's DDR3, wont work with your motherboard.

I may end up going that route - upgrading the whole thing. That's something that'll have to wait until I've got the money to do it. Didn't spot that with the ram on the Amazon link though

upgrade alltogether or your best bet is to find some old used ram. you can find some sexy tracer ram with the neato lights lol.

I wouldnt suggest going higher than 8gig of RAM

in any case, what architecture is your Windows (32bit or 64bit) 32bit you would only need 4gig max.

You can keep your current ram, and buy additional RAM to add to it, or replace with a new 2x4gig combo

Gskill is currently good value for money. In AUS you can get 4gigs for about 25euro

64bit at the moment - I'm not sure about putting another brand of RAM along side what's there already, I guess that's fine though? I think I will leave 16GB+ for when I upgrade, so adding another 4GB for now with this gear is probably what I'll do.

Those two seem reasonable, at a reasonable price as well. Probably the most I would be looking to spend at least on this hardware.

Usually yes, but since 1066MHz is considered to be overclock RAM for DDR2, the compatibility can be bit iffy. Would get the sticks from stores that gives refund with no questions asked if it doesn't work.

    To sum up:

    - Your board needs DDR2 RAM, so the max. size per stick that makes sense (price-wise) is 2GB.
    - Furthermore to avoid compatibility & stability issues, take 800MHz RAM, not higher (the gain from 800 -> 1066 is barely even measurable in most situations).
    - What do you do, that you need/want more than 8GB RAM? Most games and applications run pretty fine with even only 4GB.
    - As for particular brands: My vote goes for Kingston (ValueRAM or HyperX doesn't matter) or Samsung. Corsair is also fine, but sometimes has issues with specific boards.
Why do something simple, when there is a complicated way?
    Ryzen 7 2700X | BeQuiet Dark Rock Pro 4 | 16GB DDR4-3200 | MSI X470 Gaming Pro | MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X 8G | 500GB / 750GB Crucial SSD
Fractal Define C | LG 32UK550 | Das Model S Professional Silent | CM Storm Xornet

16GB+ of RAM? For what purpose?

In either case, 2x4GB DDR2 RAM modules:
    1.9V, DDR2 800, 5-5-5-12 (Patriot Gamer Series), $130: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820220409

Considering the price, not worth it. Either stick with 2x2GB for now (it really should be enough) or get 4x2GB, for example:
    1.8V, DDR2 667, 5-5-5-15 (Mushkin Enchanced), $43 x2: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820146695

Not shipping to UK. Kingston's HyperX are probably best option available widely in EU, and also much much more expensive than anything listed in Newegg.

That would be true perhaps if you knew what I do with the PC :P but 4GB is rarely enough for what I do.

Several running VMs, several games at the same time, some Minecraft related stuff (tends to eat RAM like no tomorrow). Quite often I hit the limit on the memory I have, so more will definitely help. In a new build, depending on what I go for, I'll probably run with 16GB - mostly for minecraft related things, but also to do all the other stuff I mentioned (I like to do a lot of this at the same time).

Heard good stuff about Mushkin, not heard of the other.

Oh, fair enough. I missed the UK-part. My bad.

    Cheapest option would perhaps be Novatech's 4GB module (x2) for £116: http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/c...ram-804gb.html

Haven't looked as far as distribution, so I wouldn't even know about availability sadly Tend to follow tinytomlogan on youtube for OC3D, he seems to use it a lot. Also, why move the thread? It isn't about a computer build, just memory.

All build help threads, may they be complete new builds or just upgrade suggestions gets moved over. We even tend to move threads regarding laptop purchase help and prebuilds as well just to keep the main forum cleaner.
