I haven't played republic yet, but a lot of the Empire world arcs are some commander being terrible and you doing his job for him. A few do stand out however.

As to class stories, I played the Sith Inquisitor and... I didn't find it that great, on the whole. It starts out very strong, but then degenerates into a series of protracted fetch quests. It is also mired with a few irritating details (why can't I turn Ashara to the dark side, that is Sith 101) From what I've heard the Sith Warrior has a much more interesting story.

As an altaholic, the only storylines that makes me want to keep playing is the imperial agent and smuggler, oddly enough they are mirror classes. The other storylines are meh at the most and predictable. So no side has the "better" storyline".

Keep playing, it gets MUCH better.

I'll break down the story section by section real quick

Prologue
You work on Hutta to get the Hutt Cartel to side with the Empire. Your work draws the attention of Darth Jadus, who is the Dark Council lord in charge of Intelligence. On Dromund Kaas you work with Intelligence (under DJ) to discover a terrorist plot. At the end of the prologue a man named the Eagle blows up DJ's flagship, which had onboard DJ as well as about 1000 other people among them important dignitaries and such. Darth Zhorrid (DJ's daughter) sends you to uncover the terror network and avenge her father. You are also made a Cipher agent, which means you no longer exist and are trained to infiltrate and go undercover

Act 1
This whole act is taking down the Terror cells on Alderaan, Balmorra, Tatooine, and Nar Shadaa. The Terror plot turns out to be organic space lasers being targeted at major Imperial Cities. The intention of the Terrorism is to strike the populace into action against the Sith and reform the Empire. Eventually you track down the Eagle and kill him. He only had half of the activation codes for the weapons, and tells you the other person was someone in the Empire. You track this to a ship out in the middle of nowhere space where Darth Jadus has been coordinating the Terrorists. Darth Jadus explains his plan, to reform the empire with giving more power to the non-Sith. The "democratization of Fear" as he calls it. At this point you can either stop DJ, kill him, and turn the weapons onto Republic bases...OR Join in with him and become the Hand of Jadus (you also get to kill Darth Zhorrid).

Act 2
Water 2 is made Keeper, Keeper becomes minister of Intelligence. You are sent undercover in SIS as a double agent. Your team is Hunter, Wheel, Chance, Some girl whose name I forget, and Ardun Koethe. You discover that you have been brainwashed and have a control word. You start having hallucinations involving Watcher X (guy from Act 1) who explains that the Republic doesn't have mind control technology. You break into Imperial Intelligence, hack the systems, and discover that the Empire (Dark Council+Minister of Intelligence) put the mind control on you after you confronted DJ (based on you DO NOT Fuck with the Dark Council). You find a cure and break the code word in time to stop the SIS from getting a weapon that would allow them to win the war. You also find out that Hunter wasn't actually SIS but worked for some other organization and is the one who gave the Republic info on the mind control.

Act 3
This whole act is figuring out who Hunter works for, and why they want to start war between Empire and Republic. You track down that Hunter is part of the Star Cabal an organization of powerful people in the Galaxy turning events for their own purpose. About halfway through the Dark Council disbands Intelligence and reassigns you to the Military under some other Darth (Rhazer?). Eventually you track down this Star Cabal and kill them off, including a final showdown with Hunter. You get their Black Codex and 2 Sith (if you joined Jadus they will be from him) appear demanding it. From here the story has multiple options (according to the SWTOR forums)

1. if you were Light Side and left Ardun Koethe alive, you can defect to the SIS
2. Light/Neutral, give codex to MoI who uses it to erase your existence. You become a free agent
3. Neutralish, you give the Codex to the Minister of Intelligence who uses it to blackmail the Sith into reestablishing Intelligence
4. join Darth Jadus and become his personal assassin/spy
5. Dark Side: Intelligence dissolves, you become a military lieutenant/become part of the new Sith intelligence.

To me, that all was pretty epic
Theron/Bloodwatcher 2013!

* Slight SPOILERS below *

Republic-side stories may start out slow or boring, but the later chapters are truly epic, with the biggest one belonging of the Jedi Knight. However the other classes storylines also have you single-handedly (or dual with your companion) bringing down Imperial Intelligence to its knees if you are a Smuggler, or eliminating the Imperial Special Forces if you are Trooper.

In my opinion, Empire stories starts out more interesting than Republic, but the Republic stories have more interesting endings than Empire.

Loving the Sith warrior right now, but I did take a sneak at the Jedi Knight and OMG, their ending is more epic then anyone else. I'll just say this, their final enemy blows away everyone else's bad guy

Class story wise,Empire is more interesting and fun early on and Republic quest get more epic later in the game.Other than class quest each side is pretty much the same.I can say for the Republic, there is always some Empire douche bag being a bigger ass hole than the other ass holes so you go and kill him or make him run.

Ive only played through the trooper story. This one was quite boring and not at all as fun as Jedi knight, IMO it was about the same as any war drama from hollywood. However it was solid and "good enough" but dont expect anything vexing.

Ive started smuggler story to lvl 30. Stay away from this one, as some of you have already stated. This one is quite slow and watered down stereotype which just make you feel like you have no purpose except getting your ship and making money. The story goes in to a more involved state but unless something really amazing happens the last act then i think this is the worst one so far.

Jedi was really good the few levels ive played but i wanted to wait for that story until i understand the gameplay and mechanics better.
