    WoW class to SW:ToR class

I keep seeing these pop up here and official forums as well as a few other fansites. Was wondering if we could start a list? Havent gotten very high but watched a lot of videos and seen what their skills do so correct me if I am wrong.

Sage/Sorcerer: Madness/Balance spec is pretty much exact copy of a shadow priest. You have instant dots, one big nuke, and a channeled spell with snare, also shields and self heals. Heard the other DPS spec plays like an ele shaman but havent tried it.

Commando:BH = Arcane Mage. Spam one attack to build up a stacking debuff then have other abilities that take advantage of it to do extra damage. Most faceroll class currently in game. Grav Round/Tracer spam will destroy anyone if they let you free cast much like arcane blast spam.

Sniper: Hunter just no pet and u have to use cover for a lot of your shots

Operative/Scoundrel: Rogue...stun lock to death in like 4-5 seconds.

Never tried out the warrior or cloth tanks so cant comment on how they play.

    It's a comparison not a versus.

As someone who's installing TOR as I type I'm curious to know how they line up with what I'm familiar with tbh, which I guess makes this constructive and somewhat helpful.

They dont line up well, which is why a comparison is... not fun.

And each Advanced Class plays differently as well. For instance a Bounty Hunter 'feels' like a hunter at first, and then in their AC they can tank or heal or dps, depending on what they choose...

I know that Jedi Shadow/Sith Assassin plays a lot like a rogue. Like, a lot.
Once in church when priest went to get more candles I whispered to my friend "Priest ran out of reagents" and heard someone laugh very loud behind us. -Peeb

I've been leveling a jedi shadow spe infiltration (I'm lvl 42). Unfortunately, I had never ever played rogue before. I guess it's similar in that you can stun and backstab but beyond that, I couldn't say. This has reconciled me we melee class. I'd been playing only ranged classes before (hunter, warlock, shaman).
A few times I had tried to roll a rogue, could never get the hang of it ^_^. Now however, I'm having a real blast with this class. I just love the combat animations

    Are there simularities? Of course.
Do they actually line up in any meaningful way? No.

There are some classes which do match fairly well. For example, a Jedi Guardian is very close to WoW's Warrior. There are differences, certainly, but then you can see a lot of parallels.

Then there are classes which don't really match at all. Bounty Hunter/Trooper is one like that. The Operative/Scoundrel is another, I think. And of course, the Cover mechanic has no parallels to WoW whatsoever, so Gunslingers/Snipers are fairly unique too.

I suppose what we can do is say 'if you liked x class in WoW, you'll probably like x class in SWTOR'. Not saying that they're exactly the same, but it's a good starting point for new players to SWTOR. And making it easier to join in the fun on SWTOR can only be a good thing, right?

So with that in mind, here's a rough outline I can think of in about 5 minutes:

Jedi Guardian/Sentinel = Warrior mainly, general melee DPS too
Jedi Sage = Priests, general caster DPS/healers
Jedi Shadow = Rogues, Paladins maybe (with the tanking tree)
Gunslinger = Hunter, general ranged DPS
    Scoundrel = Rogues, healers
Vanguard = Warlock (with the ranged Tanking, heralding back to TBC times), general ranged DPS
Commando = general ranged DPS, healers

Sometimes you can name a specific WoW class and say 'yeah, you play that and you'll enjoy this class in SWTOR'. Sometimes, you can't. But it's a starting point at least. And of course, bear in mind the Empire equivalents.

Depends. If you spec the Shadow tank it plays a lot like a (TBC) Tank Paladin or more like a mix of the current Tank Paladin and the TBC Tank Paladin. Some abilities are such extremely similar, like Kinetic Ward having 8 charges, as Holy Shield in TBC had 8 charges (definitely more than a maybe... we have judgments, holy shield, SlowTime plays a lot like a HotR, combat technique is like a tank blessing, Harnessed Shadows is like WoG, etc.).

Also, the Sage is a lot like a discipline priest if specced for heal.

The Jedi Knight is a lot like a warrior.

They do in some cases. And I don't see why some people have a problem with this. Does it make SWTOR in any way lesser? No.
Somebody got a Dark Intent and a Focus Magic for Tarecgosa and me? ;-)

Lightning Sorcerer (and the sage equivalent) is almost exactly an Elemental Shaman. You have Lightning Bolt (Lightning Strike), Chain Lightning, Lava Burst (Thundering Blast), Flame Shock (Affliction), and follow basically the same rotation. You stack up damage buffs from crits, regen force (mana) from reduced mana costs on spells based on crits, have an Elemental Mastery clone as your DPS cooldown, thunderstorm-like knockback+damage ability, and so on.

There are a few differences, like using Chain Lightning as a proc rather than more Lava Bursts, being more of a "glass cannon" with magical/force defenses rather than a mail+shield class, of course not having totems -- but the resemblance is VERY strong.

I think any comparisons require some sweeping generalizations and simplification of the class. If I had to compare my commando healer to some class in WoW, I'd say restoration shaman. Trauma probe and earth shield are identical skills. Rotation between advanced medical probe and medical probe plays a bit like riptide and greater healing wave.

But once you get to the resource management part, combat support cells and supercharging cells, the classes become so different that all comparisons are pointless.

Classes are very different, but if you want a "feels similar to" thread, I can say the Marauder/Sentinel feels very much like a Combat Rogue/Fury Warrior mix.

Depends on the class. The similarities between prot paladin and shadow are really *very* high. Till into the mechanics. Heard the same on sage healer. Other classes are more like "feels similar", AFAIK.

Think of the meaning behind that rule. It was created so we don't start pointless flame threads. However, this thread in particular could be quite helpful for those wanting to get into SWTOR, but have no idea where to start. So long as we don't let this debate of 'you can compare classes' against 'no you CAN'T' get too personal, then we should be fine.

Keep this thread useful and constructive, and there's no reason to close. So let's leave the moderating to the mods and get back to discussing, yes?

Some specs are such exact copies of WoW that they don't need "sweeping generalizations" and some specs don't have any WoW equivalent. I wanted to roll a tank and tried Juggernaut in the beta but it felt like an absolutely 1-to-1 copy of WoW warrior that I wonder if they can get sued for it. It's not just the mechanics, even the names of abilities are the same: your resource is rage which works pretty much exactly like rage in WoW, you got Charge, Sunder Armor, Retaliation, Thunderclap (oh, sorry, this one is actually called Stomp) and they all work just like they do in WoW with really minor differences...

Playing a Powertech tank now and I don't think it feels at all similar to any WoW class. Also got an Assassin up to level 50 and it felt a lot like a Paladin spiced up with a few Rogue and DK skills. It's not fundamentally similar to a Rogue, the PvE DPS rotation will be proc centered like ret pally or enha shammy and the stealth is not essential to the class in PvP. I got some stealth ambusher fanatic mates who always play "the rogue" in any game and they all rolled Assassin at first assuming that it's "the rogue" and then had to reroll to Operative. So making assumptions that some class compares to a WoW class can be a bit dangerous.

Dps Guardian is rather like an Arms Warrior will play in mop, so it could very well be decent practice.
