    That would be "rout".
Yeah, I just noticed. I'm glad I've never need to write it. But the "rowt"er argument still holds.

I pronounce it the same way you would pronounce "rout". I can't spell phonetically very well, but: "ra-out" perhaps, if you will.

I pronounce it as "Teer", like a rhimed version of Leer.
Bear as "Bear" and Fear as "Feer", don't know if it is correct though. And one is not supposed to change the thread into something else, as the thread will then lose its purposes. [/Off Topic]

The purpose was to show different uses. "Teer" like when you cry, "Tair" like when you rip something.

Teer for crying/Tare for ripping. Then again, I say wooder instead of water.

Rout - defeat, disorderly retreat - pronouced 'raut'
Route - course, road or passage - pronouced as either of the above

Use wiktionary, you'll see these words having more than 1 definition...

"Root" as in 'Just head down Route 66. You can't miss it!'
"Rowt" as in 'I'm going to take a different route to the cereal aisle.

.... Mine were but one of those examples to differentiate the words...

    Root:
1.The part of a plant, generally underground, that absorbs water and nutrients.
2.The part of a tooth extending into the bone holding the tooth in place. Root damage is a common problem of overbrushing.
3.The part of a hair under the skin that holds the hair in place. The root is the only part of the hair that is alive.

Or more simply: embedded organic source...

    Route:
1.A course or way which is traveled or passed. The route was used so much that it formed a rut. You need to find a route that you can take between these two obstacles.
2.A regular itinerary of stops, or the path followed between these stops, such as for delivery or passenger transportation. We live near the bus route. Here is a map of our delivery routes.
3.A road or path; often specifically a highway. Follow Route 49 out of town.
    4.The way to do something.

or more simply... course, road or passage.....
