Now in a normal country this would happen like this. However Britain seems to have some sort of a extradition treaty with the United States that goes years back so US might get to judge the person themselves now and whatnot, this is a special case due to the relationship of US and Britain in history.

yeah i think there is alot of people calling for a change to the one sided treaty after this case.

    also, this bit worried me;

"Speaking before the hearing, Mr O'Dwyer said he was "surprised" when police officers from the UK and America seized equipment at his home in South Yorkshire in November 2010.

However, no criminal charges followed from the UK authorities."

the bolded bit, his house in the UK was raided by police from the US? the one sided treaty really needs to change

LOL and you were mad about my analogy? Once Microsoft sells the computer they no longer own it.. MegaUpload owned their own servers thus the content on those servers belongs to the owners of MegaUpload..

If Microsoft sold copies of Windows that came with pirated copies of Photoshop on it.. then yeah.. your analogy would make sense.. but we all know that is a fallacy..

So, the government takes down a site which routinely violates the rights of IP holders and content producers and everyone gets mad. Anonymous takes down the sites of organizations which routinely protect the rights of IP holders and content producers and everyone cheers them on. Yeah, we don't need SOPA and PIPA. How can any of you cheer these guys on in good conscience? They aren't just bad for the long-term freedom of the internet, they're bad for content producers and just regular ordinary people.

    Crush them well Anonymous.
DDoS attacks on their public site doesn't really have lasting affect for them to care much.

Yeah, how dare the government impinge my right to consume a product that took a year and $100 million dollars to make without paying for it!

    HOW DARE THEY!

I don't see how they can use this as leverage to pass either one of these bills. Neither of these bills will stop Anonymous from doing anything. Nothing can stop them from doing whatever they want, whenever they want. They have been proving that for years now.

GO GO ANONYMOUS destroy the federal scum.

People cheering them on have no clue how much this actually hurts any ability to actually solve any problems as they relate to SOPA / PIPA. Thinking that in any way hacking anyone's websites is the proper course of action just shows how little you actually know. Enjoy when collective international governments actually do use this type of attacking to pass legislation. And then cry about it on threads on MMO Champion so I can laugh in your faces.

Hackers DDoSing government websites are not even in the same ballpark as the US Gov't proposing SOPA/PIPA. Two different animals. One is a protest in the form of a DDoS; the other two are bills that are meant to (badly) enforce anti-piracy laws.

I don't normally support Anonymous, but what they are doing is similar to the protests that the Occupy people did and what some websites did in protest of SOPA/PIPA. So...rawk on, Anon.
The problem the government will have with it, however, is that they are powerless to do anything about it...and this makes power-whore politicians nervous.

Megaupload actually did try to curb illegal activity. When the entire function of the site is to host files, not a specific type of file, but many different types, it gets very hard to curb abuse. If you ran a site like imgur and didn't try to promote it as a child porn site, tried to stop people from posting child porn, and it still had a lot of child porn, I could see them shutting down your site temporarily to clean it up, but to try to hold you responsible would be ridiculous.

What you are suggesting is that people be held responsible for the actions of other people or to shut down their own site. Forcing people to either shut down their sites when people abuse them or face criminal charges is absolutely retarded.

Might as well go after all the internet provides because the pirated material is traveling over their lines, etc.
