Windows Live is the worst software I've ever had inflicted upon me in my entire life. And I tried to use the original version of Steam.

Not to nitpick but what precisely can one add to the thread anyway? Short of a dear diary mood apathetic option I'm not terribly sure there is anything that anyone can add to the situation at all. Perhaps it's just me but not having achievements on my windows live id, probably not the end of the world. If you want to jump ahead go download a saved game, I'm sure there are plenty of them out there. Moral of the story is don't have your things get stolen, and expect random companies to backup what are otherwise local files.
