You don't understand.

The cooling system, form factor and overall design of laptops is aimed at supporting their particular GPU and only that - you cannot open up the laptop and just swap out the graphics chip. The die is permanently attached to the PCB, the "motherboard" of the laptop isn't designed for any other GPU other than the one it came with. You don't just find GPU chips floating around in the market on their own, why do you think no such thing as a "laptop graphics card" is sold anywhere?

You can add/change the RAM and HDD. That is the limit of what you can change in laptops.

The only exception to this is when the manufacturer offers a service to upgrade the graphics in select models (rare cases) - usually they just offer different laptops with different GPU's and say "do you want X laptop with X card, or Y laptop with Y card?"

The other *real* exception are "external" graphics cards with utilize USB ports (extremely slow for graphics purposes) and external PCIe cards to slot a desktop graphics card into. It's quite a lot of work and not very many laptops even support such a thing because the GPU has to work together with the CPU (almost as one) for a consistent experience. Remember with laptops there isn't even an actual "card", it's a fixed chip with a fixed cooling system integrated into the laptop.

This is the system I use to run all my games with. It's almost 5 years old but I get about 17 fps except in extremely highly active areas all on mostly low (with a spattering of medium settings thanks to auto detect). The game still looks lovely and I'm able to participate very well in any event I've been in. My highest characters is almost lvl 37.

Also, AFAIK, the human eye cannot detect any FPS higher than 60 so not sure anything above that matters. I could be wrong though.

You could be wrong, and you are wrong

The human eye doesn't see in FPS because real life doesn't work in FPS, it sees in whatever it is shown. A bunch of test subjects were shown a blank screen, on which an image was flashed for 1-255th of a second. Not only were they able to recognize the image, most of them could name the exact make/model of the car they were shown - so you could say the eye can even pick up something that's flashing at 255 fps.

I personally use a 120hz monitor and the difference between 60hz and 120hz is like night and day for me, the blurring at fast speeds is noticeably less and there is virtually zero ghosting/tearing, gameplay feels butter-smooth and now going back to anything less than 40-50fps feels like a horribly choppy experience.

You can definitely play.... What's your definition of decent settings? Your machine is outdated and your video card kinda sucks. The bigger question you should be asking yourself is, can I afford to buy a new computer and how much am I willing to spend?

Thanks for the response Kaelleria. My definition of decent would be playable, as in not too much lag even if I had to turn the settings down, yet still able to enjoy the visuals somewhat. I don't have to have to be able to see every blade of grass.

I know my machine is out of date but I wouldn't be able to spend more than $200 right now enhancing it. That's what led me to the idea of maybe just putting in a new graphics card. Could I get away with just doing that for now?

I'm betting your current board doesn't have any PCI Express 2.0 slots so upgrading your video card is kind of moot.

You'll probably get around 10-15 fps on low settings with your current setup if BahamutOmega's setup is any indication. Unfortunately your limited by your older hardware components in terms of upgrades.

Top configuration seems kind of weak, you might get to play on low. Even my 4870 512/2gigs of ram and E6850 was running on low-windowed. At best.

Upgraded to 7850 and ram to 8 gigs and works perfectly fine on mid-high with ultra lod distance sitting on 55-70 fps.

Yes, it should be okish in world zones on low except cities - you'll prolly feel lag there, as well as you'll definately feel lag in instanced ones.

He's playing at 1280x720, should be alright at low settings with a few tweaks.

Hmm...no wonder WoW continues to stick with the same graphics engine, the majority of the playerbase seem to be running 5-7 year old tech (or equivalent) :S

GW2 is really going to hit some of you people hard :P

I recently got a HD7970 to replace my GTX670 for GW2 and difference has been quite good. I play at 2560x1600 with all options turned up and get like 70-100 frames running around. Even large WvWvW has been pretty good. Other parts are fairly old: 4GHz i7 930, 20GB RAM and using a EVGA x58 board.
