I had this conversation with a stubborn friend of mine who plays Dungeons and Dragons and other RPGs. After he played Dragon Age: Origins he keeps on mentioning how great the story was and how it is superior to all other RPGs. He claimed that Skyrim is trash without even finishing it, because he didn't like a single moment during the main quest. He even claims that some of the best RPGs of all time, like the Final Fantasy series are not RPGs because they do not offer choices concerning the story, like DAO does. I tried to explain to him that there are other elements that define an RPG but he won't listen.
Can someone give me a satisfying answer concerning what makes an RPG, because I can't stand him being that stubborn. He almost makes me want to punch him.
