[Movies] Good horror films / The Horror Compendium

Hello all, I am on a quest to find a horror film that is actually scary. I want to know that I'm not desensitized to horror movies nowadays. I've been watching quite a few movies recently, including the "scariest movie ever!" Paranormal Activity series...lets just say I laughed at almost all the "scares." I'm not going to list all of the horror films I've seen, because that would be quite a list...but some of the more recent have been: [Rec]/[Rec2] (awesome movies, but not really scary), The Ring series, a few of the Friday the 13th films, Nightmare on Elm Street, the Host, and many, many more. So, throw me your best MMO-Champion legion, scare me! I want to feel my heart racing, I want to feel it in my throat! Show me that movies can still be scary!

    Thanks!

Honestly? Most people (me too) consider paranormal activity as one of the most horrific movies out there. Don't know how you watch movies, either with lights on and people around you or just while playing/doing something else. Maybe you just want to show off, doesn't matter.

OT: Event Horizon is one of my favourite, I watched that movie when I was a teenager, (I'm 24 now) and it scared me very good, Blairwitch project 1 is pretty nice, too.

But personally I think you just gonna say "what a sissy movies" because you are so cool and aren't afraid of anything, however, these are the ones with the most horror potential.

No, I'm not saying these things to "show off," (I'm terrified of spiders :P )and I watched them with the lights off and the surround sound cranked way up, and no I wasn't doing anything other than watching the film. I think the problem is the fact that I've played many horror VIDEO GAMES, and I need that extra immersion that a game gives me to scare me (Amnesia and the Penumbra series scared the crap out of me)

I'll check out Event Horizon, thanks for the recommendation. Blair Witch was more interesting to me than scary, but to each their own I suppose.

Hmmm. Ill list some "scary" ones. Then ill list some good ones.

"Scary": Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Hills Have Eyes, Drag Me To Hell, Martyrs, Candyman, The Crazies (might not be scary, but is good)

Really, none are scary unless you have a heart condition.. but here are some good ones.

My Soul To Take, Trick R Treat, Scream Series, Daybreakers, Devil, The Box, Let Me In, 30 Days of Night, Zombieland, Darkness Falls, 28 Days Later, 28 Weeks LAter, The Descent.

I wish I could think of more.. lol, but right now my mind is blank.
My list is based on personal ones that I enjoyed. I tend to like more "B" and "C" type horror movies. I found alot of mine that I have seen my just googling top 25 horror movies of XXXX. Where XXXX = the year. Thats all I did. Hope you find some I like, also enjoyable

In The Mouth Of Madness - severely underrated. It's one of the best horror movies I know - it's genuinely scary (and not just gross, actually scary) and has a nice Lovecraftian vibe to it. And Sam Neill. You can't go wrong with Sam Neill.

Event Horizon - again, it's great at building an actual scary atmosphere instead of just showing gore. And, coincidentally, also has Sam Neill in it

Machinist - worth watching for Christian Bale's performace alone.

Hellraiser (parts 1 and 2 are very good, 3 is ok, 4 is abysmal, 5, 6 and 7 are watchable, 8 is terrible, I refuse to acknowledge the existance of 9).

And if you haven't seen them yet, Saw is a very good movie (part 1 that is, part 2 is ok, then it goes down fast).

I'll definatly have to check out Event Horizon, second recommendation so far and thanks for the recommendations also. And another point was brought up here: "Scary" movies now are about gore...I don't really find that scary, especially since it's just horribly unrealistic most of the time. I also have to agree with Saw, the original was pretty great.

Lake Mungo was pretty good. The Grudge scared me too, when it came out.

Don't know as in most scary, but as in most disturbing you should definately see "A Serbian Film".

That's for people who have never seen a scary one before I think ... I saw the first which was a total joke because of the dumb alphamale.

This is very strange to me, I remembered watching this in the theatres and not finding it scary at all so I decided to rewatch it a few months ago ... still don't see why it's supposed to be scary it just seems like a normal decent scifi.

I'm very jumpy so I tend to avoid horrormovies but they also interest me, it's a strange connection.

Horror is like humor, it's very subjective so it's hard to give you advice on which ones are good.

I'm still wondering if I should see REC because of this, regarded by many as the most scary movie particulary the last 15m, I've read some really disturbing posts about how it fucked people up, but then again Paranormal Activity 1 also spawned a lot of comments about it being scary and that one did absolutely nothing for me.

That movie is the most messed up thing I have ever seen (that isn't real) haha, I would recommend watching it just to see something that puts you in check

Scary? Not really, at least not in my opinion. It is a phenomenal movie though, especially if you watch REC 1 and 2 back to back (About 3 hours long). Judging by you saying they interest you I think you would thoroughly enjoy it. If you've seen Quarantine then you should watch them just to see how much worse the American remake is (Quarantine is a remake of the first REC) the last 15m was pretty awesome and had me on the edge of my seat, but even still, wasn't "scary" so to say.

You're absolutely right in saying Horror is subjective, as well.

Drag me to hell was a good watch, maybe not terribly scary but a good movie.

Exactly. This is why I don't really enjoy most of the new "horror" movies, that waste their time with trying to come up with more and more gross ways of killing people. Thatt's not scary. That's disgusting. Yes, it will probably make me want to stop watching and go throw up, but it will not make me scared. I realize gore is part of the horror genre, but it should be a means to an end (namely, scaring the audience) and not an end in itself.
