    WoW Iron Man Challenge

So i am quite interested in trying this, and was looking for your guys' input on which class to roll etc.

Also, I think it would be quite cool if someone made an addon that tracked the rules for you, in case you accidentally break one or something.

    /thread
    most likely drunk and posting

My guess would be that NE mages are the easiest. NE because of their shadowmeld racial (it puts you out of combat in case of a close fight) and mages because they aren't that gear dependent and have nice CC and of course ranged damage.

Edit: You can sign up with your character on wowironman.com

Oh this is easily by a mile the hunter class with LOLOL Mend pet OP.

I'd suggest posting on the official forums, since we've got a good following there.

The "easy mode" class seems to be hunter, simply because of the lack of OOMing and a pet to take the hits. As for add-ons... The only ones that are really tracked are consumables and deaths, and just use the honor system with the others.

as far as i know, a part of the challenge is random race and random class.
but else tauren hunter would by far the best, stun, pet to tank for you, infinite kite, good cc, and feign death if you fuck up.

First off, I never heard of this "Growing Ironman Community" that blizzard is talking about.

Secondly, I've got a feeling that what that post is REALLY doing is they're field-testing an idea to see if people will actually bite at the concept. Then, while monitoring it to see if enough people go for it - they'll start working on implementing some funky mode/dungeon/rewards (think D3's Nightmare mode).

Or it could simply be an attempt to bring back/encourage new funky community ideas. :P

Me? I'm much happier sticking to my casual play on my 1 toon I've had since Vanilla. But Altaholics? Knock yourself out! ^_^

An other advice, go roll on a PvE server. Else there will always be jerks ganking you.

I'd say lock/hunter, can you choose a specialisation but just no talents? Or no specialisation either, if you can't go hunter else lock or hunter are viable.

It's started off small, but 4 threads are now post locked (or nearly to it) and there is now a 5th thread on it. Compared to when it first started, there are a LOT more people attempting it and it's kind of nice to see a shout out on this.

On the other hand, when it first started, greys and whites on the ah were mere silver or copper and are now upwards of 10g or more.

I don't know why the blue poster linked to an old version of the rules, here's the newest thread.

According to the rules that I first read you chose race and class with the roll of a dice so no reason to decide what the perfect class for you to do the challenge with is. (though this rule is for some reason not present in the ruleset linked by the blue post..)

It's fun, I got my Warrior to level 10...then accidentally pulled like 7 spiders in the Worgen starting zone.
I'm on Wrymest Accord apart of the guild if anyone is intrested in talking to me in-game.

It's something to do when your bored and not doing anything.
Warning: It sounds really easy, its actually extremely difficult. Especially at later levels.

If I recall correctly the furthest someone has ever got is 63, a hunter.

That's nice...but you could always just lie and say you rolled whatever you want. Unless Blizzard implements an "Ironman mode" that forces you to random roll, there's no way to enforce that.

It's not present because the first version I read, while very similar to what is on the forums now, was not the same as what the official forums are going by... and included nothing about random rolling your race/class.

The first character I saw doing this was "Ironsally" on US-Zangarmarsh, well before it became popular on the official forums again. I don't know when that character was created, but the earliest achievement I see is to obtain a companion pet, on July 15th, 2011. Under that version of the Iron Man challenge, the challenge was simply to hit level cap without talents/spec, using only white/grey gear and no consumables/glyphs/enchants/etc. Death was permitted, under the theory that in an online MMOthere were simply too many ways to die that were not the fault of the player. (I'm not saying that version of the challenge was better or worse, just that it did come first and did not include a randomly generated character).

The original thread that got all this going again (http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/3881708489), and which seems to have made it really popular on the official forums, also said nothing about a randomly generated character.

The wowironman.com website referenced in the 5th Ironman thread on the official forums says nothing about a randomly generated character in their rules.

The thread that created this originally, referenced above, is http://us.battle.net/wow/en/forum/topic/3595375172 which specifically states: "You may choose any available race/class combination for the IMC as long as 1-9 are followed strictly."

I'm sure that there are prior versions with their own rulesets... but the point is this: there is not one version of the ironman challenge. One of the versions stipulated that you had to randomly generate your class/race, but many (I would wager most) do not.

I've been considering doing this challenge myself... and if I do, I certainly won't randomly generate race. I might do class, but there are races I just don't enjoy playing (under no circumstance would I create a tauren or an orc; most other races, it's only one gender I can't stand to play). Leaning toward just making a mage, though... seems like it'd be the most fun with this sort of challenge, at least to me.

The random race/class was an idea from a thread on the EU forums. Some people have picked what they want. Others have rolled. It's all up to you on how your pick. Of course, if you use a 1d6 for race and 1d10 for class, you can get some interesting invalid combinations. This latest selection, I had to pass on a Forsaken paladin, Tauren Rogue, and Goblin druid.

i would think the rogue class. not because it's the easiest to solo with but because death for any reason disqualifies, and if anyone can get out of danger it's a rogue. also, i can see being killed by other players a problem with this, so being able to hide would be a big advantage. if pvp deaths didn't count, then i'd probably suggest a hunter or a warlock.

I tend to give Blizzard the benefit of the doubt for a lot of things, which has become increasingly hard to do, most notably with the rise of this Iron Man Challenge. It's not so much that it exists, hell even Blizzard added a default "Hardcore" mode into Diablo 1&2, but the way they've been drawing attention to and spotlighting this makes me kind of angry. People have been "Hardcore" leveling for a long time, some even go more hardcore and level passively (Don't kill anything and still level to max), this has been a trend people use since Vanilla, but never before has Blizzard taken the time to flaunt it as a way of enjoying the game. It's like they know they made leveling too swift and mindless easily, and that the end-game content is not nearly as plentiful as it should've been this entire Expac. I hate to derail things at all, and I hope I don't sound like I'm blowing things out of proportion, but the way Blizzard is promoting this, it makes me feel like they've finally gone into the lazy territory people have been decrying for years. For the first time in my over-a-decade's worth of experience with Blizzard, I actually feel like they're being lazy and actively trying to dismiss people's complaints by pointing out some third-party's idea as their own.

OT: You can't pick your class in the challenge, but if you could, Paladin is always the answer.
Warlocks are what FDR was talking about

Don't really see anything great about it, especially if you already have a lot of characters @ level 85. If Blizzard implements a reward I'd probably care, but it's just really not an attractive idea (to me) at all.

I wonder why they don't have the rule to not use any gold at all. I made a character a long time ago where he couldn't spend any gold at all (training, repair, mail) and that was really fun. I only made it to about 50 something before I got bored. That one alone seems harder than all the others except maybe the only wearing white/gray quality items.

I also don't like the "no death" rule. I've died more because of lag or disconnects than anything else. Falling through elevator, disconnecting right when I pull a mob, etc. If I make it all the way to 84 then die from lag I would seriously destroy everything in my room.
