Tyler Durden was just a fabrication in his head. When he shoots himself in the cheek, the severe mental shock "deletes" this other personality. Kind of like ECT (shock treatment used before good psych drugs were available). This part of the movie basically says that the whole Tyler thing was crazy and wrong.

Before this point the movie glorifies nihilism and anarchist and even terrorist themes, talks about using pain and violence as some form of peculiar catharsis and reinforcement of base male urges, rejection of society and being jaded and sick of the routine of daily living.

It used to be one of my favourite movies. I watched it again several months ago and didn't have the same feeling for it. Still a good movie, just didn't hold my interest as much as before.

Can someone explain the penguin scene to me ?
I thought it was just a symbolism for serenity and how free it is; but at the same time wing clipped (society keeping him down maybe ?)
Seems like something they just lifted from the book without much explanation; kinda like dragon tattoo .... o fincher.

when i see comments like this, i tend to lean towards the side that people simply didnt understand the substance. Ed Norton likes to go for those scripts that just... exist on several levels.

Whether you agree with Tyler or not, his points are largely sound & rational, and are an interesting portrayal on the potential 'end' of capitalist consumerism.

Many people live in fear and ignorance of their own mortality. Tyler not only recognizes it, he runs towards it with arms open wide. Its only this that leads him towards happiness.

See the problem is in '11/'12 we now know that capitalism has it's flaws; which are huge. But we are also smart enough to know that nihilism, anarchy, random acts of violence and terrorism are NOT the answer.

Initially Tyler's philosophies were appealing, the scene where he holds a gun to the chinese store clerk to go and finish his degree to be a vet - THAT was good, there was a good message, reject society forcing you to just "get by" and actually improve yourself. But soon after that Tyler's philosophies simply devolve into nonsense.

I dunno maybe the movie just doesn't have the same appeal in a present day context as it did when it came out.

In the end of the movie (the last 20 minutes) it's clear that tyler has brought him nothing but UNHAPPINESS. Project athena/mayhem is obviously shown to incorporate drones, so you go from capitalist drones to a fascist/anarchist even more mindless set of drones. This fact is literally shoved in your face.

There really isn't a coherent message against capitalism at all.

Am I reading it wrong ? Perhaps the book did it better ?

Great movie. Watched it only a couple of times tho.

I think it's a decent film, but highly overrated.

I prefer the movie to the book because of the soundtrack. Very good watch.

Definitely in my top 10. Edward Norton keeps pumping out great flicks.

Did you mean David Fincher ? Personally I haven't seen many norton movies I thought he usually did romantic comedies and drama type stuff.
If you meant David Fincher, the game was good, se7ven was really really good and dragon tattoo was mostly faithful to the book (mediocre as a film tho imo). I found "the game" to be quite entertaining actually.
I'd say se7en was his best film - i've heard good things about zodiac but I haven't seen it yet.

Good movie, didnt watch it until it was a few years old and was completely different then I expect.
Also Helena Bonham Carter was HOT in it.

It's the kind of movie that shows brad Pitt is a great actor imo. Not just the pretty boy with no substance who attracts women by just walking around half naked. Inglorious Bastards, Burn after Reading, Benjamin Button, Twelve Monkey's etc. all show this really.
Same for Edward Norton, but unlike Brad Pitt I don't think he has this burden that people just look at him as a pretty boy. He's actually just a brilliant actor and the movies he plays in show it.

As for Fight Club it self, I love the movie, never read the book though.

As with all of Palahniuk's work (or nearly all of it, anyway), it's basically just about people trying to find ways to connect with other people. Though pretty much everyone in Palahniuk's stuff is completely fucking batshit insane to a greater or lesser degree.

Book is better than the movie, mostly because Palahniuk's writing style is fun to read, though it's hard not to like the cinematography of the movie, plus Brad Pitt and Edward Norton worked fantastically well together, and Helena Bonham Carter played Marla as just slutty enough to be okay with their treatment of her while still being normal enough to feel slightly sympathetic for her at the same time.

I don't really bother trying to read into what the plot is actually about. I just take it at face value and enjoy it for what it is.

Helena Bonham Carter is always hot. I don't usually like stick figure women, but she's definitely hot.

I liked it. The subliminal image of a penis at the end cracked me up. The penis flash is so quick that you can't see it unless you pause it in exactly the right place. You can tell that something is there when your watching the movie, but you can't see that it is a penis unless you pause it. It is one frame of film and it is a close up shot of a penis.

Yeah that was pure comedy genius right ? When I saw that scene I fell off my chair laughing and my sides hurt for days.
It was so subliminal, deep and subtle. It was a pivotal moment in cinematic history and a turning point in David Fincher's career.

My friend told me it was just unfunny garbage toilet humor that only a certain demographic of american teenagers at the time would enjoy but I brushed him off as being a silly plebian that doesn't understand such deep and profound movies for mature people like myself.

If you like things like deconstruction and non-linear plots, then it's the perfect movie. Palahniuk even admitted that it was better than the book.
