[Books] Need Suggestions For New Books To Read

    Hello.

So I enjoy reading, especially because I have an hour long commute to work. My only problem is I have a hard time finding books that really drag me in and keep me hooked. The only book series to actually do this was Harry Potter. So knowing this, does anyone have any good suggestions to read?

I started reading the Percy Jackson series which isn't too bad. But I just wanted to hear what other people thought.

    Thanks

Dave Duncan (3) (( The Seventh Sword Series))
    The Reluctant Swordsman
    Coming of wisdom
    The Destiny of the Sword

Wallie Smith can feel the pain. He goes to the hospital, remembers the doctors and the commotion, but when he wakes up it all seems like a dream. However, if that was a dream how do you explain waking up in another body and in another world? Little Wallie finds himself in the physique of a barbarian swordsman, accompanied by both an eccentric priest babbling about the Goddess and a voluptuous slave girl. Is this a rude awakening or a dream come true? What in the world will Wallie do now that he's found himself stranded in a strange realm? Well it just so happens that the Goddess is in need of a swordsman. It won't be easy but if he succeeds he will have everything he wants. If he doesn't, things could get ugly. Wallie is reluctant but sees his chance. If only he had the faintest clue as to the adventure he is about to unleash! If only he could imagine the forces that will be out to vanquish him!

Jack Campbell (6)+ (( The Lost Fleet Series ))
    Dauntless
    Fearless
    Courageous
    Valiant
    Relentless
    Victorious

The Alliance has been fighting the Syndic for a century-and losing badly. Now its fleet is crippled and stranded in enemy territory. Their only hope is Captain John "Black Jack" Geary-a man who's emerged from a century-long hibernation to find he has been heroically idealized beyond belief. Now, he must live up to his own legend.

Joel Rosenburg (3)+ (( Guardians of the Flame ))
    "The Sleeping Dragon"
    "The Sword and the Chain"
    "The Silver Crown"

Margret Weis & Tracey Hickman (7) (( Deathgate Cycle ))

Dragon Wing is the first of seven novels in the "Death Gate Series." Long ago powerful sorcerers called the Sartans sundered Earth as we know it into four separate planets -- air, fire, stone, and water. Onto each planet they placed dwarves, elves, and humans, and of course many of their kind to watch over everything. They also created a prison world for their ancient enemy, the Patryns. I don't want to give away anything from the novel, but that is the set-up for the series.

Margret Weis & Tracey Hickman (3)+ ((Dragonlance Chronicles))

Chronicles, Book I: Dragons of Autumn Twilight
Chronicles, Book II: Dragons of Winter Night
Chronicles, Book III: Dragons of Spring Dawning (2 books)

Lifelong friends, they went their separate ways. Now they are together again, though each holds secrets from the others in his heart. They speak of a world shadowed with rumors of war. They speak of tales of strange monsters, creatures of myth, creatures of legend. They do not speak of their secrets. Not then. Not until a chance encounter with a beautiful, sorrowful woman, who bears a magical crystal staff, draws the companions deeper into the shadows, forever changing their lives and shaping the fate of the world.

No one expected them to be heroes.

    Least of all, them.

    Simon Green (4) (( Deathstalker ))

When Owen Deathstalker, foppish aristocrat-about-the-galaxy and master of the martial arts who'd rather write history, is outlawed by the maximally evil empress Lionstone, it's a pretty sure bet that narrow escapes and desperate deeds will follow. They do. This first-in-a-series is populated by a suave and suitably blase hero, nasty villains galore, a wide assortment of peculiar supporting characters of many bizarre species, and the requisite confused love interest; and it is set on a criminal planet, Mistworld, at an imperial court, and all over a wildly variegated galaxy. Green blends derring-do, space battles, and wry banter aplenty to form an eminently satisfying space opera.

    Leo frankowski (6)+ (( Crosstime Engineer ))

THE RIGHT MAN FOR THE JOB
One moment Conrad Schwartz was a hungover hiker in the mountains of modern Poland, the next he was running for his life from an angry Teutonic knight.

At first Conrad just thought he'd stumbled across a mad hermit. But several days of ever stranger events convinced him that he had somehow been stranded in A.D 1231.

And that meant Conrad had to turn Medieval Poland into the most powerful country in the world. Otherwise the Mongols were destined to destroy it--in just ten years!

Orson Scott Card (6) (( Enders Game ))

Intense is the word for Ender's Game. Aliens have attacked Earth twice and almost destroyed the human species. To make sure humans win the next encounter, the world government has taken to breeding military geniuses -- and then training them in the arts of war... The early training, not surprisingly, takes the form of 'games'... Ender Wiggin is a genius among geniuses; he wins all the games... He is smart enough to know that time is running out. But is he smart enough to save the planet?

    R.A.Salvatore (17+) (( Drittz Do'Urden Series ))
    L.Ron Hubbard (1) (( Battlefield Earth ))
David Weber (12+) (( Honor Harrington Series ))
    S.M.Stirling (3) (( Island in a Sea of Time ))

If you liked Harry Potter it's probably safe to assume you'll like well written fantasy or sci fi.
Additionally if you're looking for books that drag you in and keep you hooked, and don't ramble on forever; try Hobbit by Tolkien, or the Foundation Series by Asimov (Foundation 1,2,3,edge/earth).
Another good idea perhaps is to look for good short stories in the genre you like. If you're like me and have ADD problems, this is always a good idea.

Definitely try the Dragonlance Series, not only the Chronicles, but on to the Legends and beyond. All the ones done by Weis & Hickman are great.

Ender's game was mentioned as well, also fabulous stories.

Drizzt Do'Urden Series by Salvatore is great as well.
"There is no teacher but the enemy. No one but the enemy will tell you what the enemy is going to do. No one but the enemy will ever teach you how to destroy and conquer. Only the enemy shows you where you are weak. Only the enemy tells you where he is strong. And the rules of the game are what you can do to him and what you can stop him from doing to you." -Mazer Rackham - Ender's Game Orson Scott Card

Oh the amount of Books I could point you towards

I'll limit myself to a few favourite authors:

Steven Erikson is my absolute favourite with the Tales from the Malazan Book of the Fallen! He writes EPIC fantasy on a scale I haven't found anywhere else, and he does it WELL!

Terry Goodkind is a good #2 with the Sword of Truth series.

George R R Martin with the now well renowned A Song of Ice and Fire series (first book is called Game of Thrones, you might have heard of the TV series )

Robert Jordan also enters the list with Raymond Feist, R A Salvatore, Tolkien, Hickman/Weiss, and Steven Brust That should keep you busy a good while

    "Harry Potter for adults."

Is the way "The name of the wind," and its sequel "The wise man's fear," has been described in some of the reviews. I enjoyed both immensely and will eagerly devour everything next. The author is Patrick Rothfuss.

On another genre, also immensely rich and popular, are Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" trilogy: "Northern Lights" is book one, followed by "The Subtle Knife" and "The Ember Spyglass."

You really can't go wrong with this.

it's Amber spyglass Nodata :P And I came here to recommend those exact books, so damn you for beating me to the punch

Then to stop myself just parroting the other people in this thread (although seriously, read A Song of Ice and Fire George RR Martin is a god) I'd say read *almost* anything by Haruki Murakami, he's a fucking legend. Some of his books are a little slow (Norwegian Wood is a good example) but even his bad books are better than most peoples good ones. I would recommend starting with Hardboiled Wonderland and the end of the world, then Kafka on the shore, move on to 1Q84 (his latest MASTERWORK, 3 books of pure win) and then finish of with my personal favourite (which I'm re-reading now ) Wind-up bird Chronicle.

That should keep you in reading material for a good long time.

Piers Anthony novels were very good, IMO.

First one I read was this one...

Looks like they may be making a movie about it too.

“A Song of Ice and Fire” series. They are phenomenal.

But the best fantasy book I ever read was Conor Kostick’s “Epic”.

First book in the His Dark Materials series is called The Golden Compass in the US for some reason, Northern Lights everywhere else. Great series.

I would also recommend anything by Neil Gaiman. One of my favorite authors. Neverwhere and American Gods in particular are great.

If you are looking for something more humorous, check out Christopher Moore's stuff. Reminds me alot of an American Douglas Adams. Lamb, Bloodsucking Fiends, and Dirty Job are my favorites, but I have read everything he has written and never been disappointed.

I have to agree with A Song of Ice and Fire series. It's top notch.
The Magicians (and its sequel), as somebody else said.
The Book of Lost Things (good if you like really creepy, eerie stories. This book kind of freaked me out for a while, but it was a great read).

I thought of another one :P
the Night Watch series: Night Watch, Day Watch, Twilight Watch and Last Watch by Sergei Lukyanenko.
AWESOME series, was turned into a couple of fucking terrible movies, but the book series is beyond epic Anton Gorodetski is a PIMP

also was I the only one that found Wise Man's Fear MASSIVELY dissapointing?

There's quite a few good recomendations in there.

I bought the dresden files because of their recomendation from that thread, and I quite enjoy them.

I would also suggest "ready player one".
