AMD 5970 HD vs AMD 7970

    Hey mmo champion community
i'm sort of hitting a wall to what to do what is the best GPU choice.
I have an old 5970 AMD dual gpu and I don't know if its worth swapping my old gpu for the new 7970 in my eye's there pretty much the same.In raw power
the 5970 still kicks the 7970 in the balls and in some game's the 7970 kicks ass in new games like BF3 ...
Now for me as user is it worth to give 550 euro for the new 7970 to maybe end up in disappointment and see no real gain out of this purchase.
I have done some research on the web bud it did not make me any smarter it did the opposite.
now i hope to find some answers here.Pretty please no AMD or Nvidia fanboy smacktalk.
Im running my games on 1920x1080 hd monitor.
So if i do the upgrade will i see a big leap in performance or will i only end up seeing 5% or 6% increase. Not worth the budget if i only gain 6% of performance

Based on this thread at techpowerup, asking the same question, it looks like it is not worth upgrading, for the most part. Depending on what CPU you have though, might be something to consider upgrading.

I do have plans to change my old cpu I7 950 to a new 3930K.
so as far as the 2 are the same is it worth the upgrade if i changed my rig to the new cpu.
I might consider asking a it -specialist on this case.

Any particular reason you want to upgrade to such an expensive CPU?

And an IT Specialist? What are they going to tell you? Hell I'm in school to be an IT Specialist and I know of some folks on this forum who work in the industry/have the certificates. The 5970 is a beast of a card and likely not worth upgrading to the 7970, perhaps the overclocking potential in the 7970 could make it worth it, but I'd say perhaps just wait for the 7990.

3D rendering for hobby my old cpu is holding me back compared to this new cpu was wondering to buy the X version bud don't want to spend so much money on my hobby i mean 999 euro for only a few % performance gain i thing the 3930K will do just fine for my rendering part.
Thx for your feedback Deltrusdisc i hope you do well in school so you can find a nice job as It specialist.

Deltrus got pretty close to hitting it on the head. If you're not playing newer games, don't upgrade. You've got a still awesome GPU. If you're looking to play newer games with less heat, etc, you should probably look into a 7950/7970. Honestly, I'd look to upgrade now, just because it's going to be quite awhile until new cards come out (excluding Nvidia) and you have some really solid options out right now.

    Thanks, I appreciate it!

I agree with Fuzzy though, upgrading now if you can, would not be a bad move by any means. Hell I'm pretty sure you could still have the 5970 in your computer (maybe?) to help with the tasks, kind of like a dedicated GPU folding rig or something - half the GPUs do nothing other than fold. :P The 7970 though is seriously a powerful card and can overclock like a demon, and crossfired they become a deadly pair.

You can't argue with 2,048 stream processors in one GPU, buy two and you'll have more than the 3,200 in the 5970.

Sell your 5970 to a bitcoin miner before Pitcairn (Radeon HD 7800 series) comes out.
