    networkcard

Is there a possibility that the failure of the networkcard has anything to do with the bios, and can a reset or update can fix this?
It still doesn't work after formatting and reinstalling windows, and the bios is the only thing that comes to mind.
I'm almost certain that there is no hardware error.

Well, depending on what you mean with "failure" - yes, it's quite possible. If you're using an onboard NIC, you can turn it off and on in the BIOS, I'm guessing that that's the problem...

its an onboard NIC yes, but I haven't seen that option yet in the bios.
The failure is that it just doesn't do anything anymore. I can't turn wireless on/off with the button on the laptop. it doesn't recognise wired connection.
But this all started when I did a systemfix in the multiboot screen(I think?), that didn't even do anything because it was the keyboard that broke

Try checking hardware devices and check if there are any errors there, if there are go to your laptop manufacturer's website and download the right drivers.

Because if it doesn't recognize wired connections you either dont have the drivers installed or your NIC is broke like you said.

    So it's a notebook?

Well, usually, it's under peripherals or something like that in the BIOS. What does your device manager in Windows say? Are the drivers installed? Is the device activated?

  6. #6
Sounds like a driver problem to me

EDIT: The wifi button you are talking about...is it a hardware button, or a software button ? reason I ask is that you say you did some fix to your keyboard ? Some of the special keys on laptops need drivers or software to be turned on/installed to work.

I'll check the hardware when I get home, I didn't do this after the new installation of windows, but I think I did before.
I remember that drivers were a problem to find, but since I dont have the right names or numbers to find it now, i'll let you know more tonight

edit: the networkdrivers seem alright, but I have an error with base system device, i'll try to find that.

@lilbruz, its hardware, next to the power button, but since wired doesn't work either it would be weird that it has something to do with that dont you think?

Most laptops have both, so even if you have the hardware one set to "on", you wont be able to use it unless the driver is there also. It can also be conflicting software. What brand is your laptop ?

Reason I ask is that some brand make their own wifi controlling software, and even though some of them are ok, they can still conflict with the built in Windows one, so if one is enabled, it can mess up the other one. But as a rule of thumb...if you have unidentified hardware in your list, you need to fix that first of all. If you cant see what it is specifically, you will be able to identify it with the hardware ID. But lets work on that if we need to

I bet the system driver you dont have is the ethernet port. That would make sense if you also wont get a connection by plugging in a cable

well I learned so much from that post lol, its a medion MD96290.
originaly there was windows vista on it, and on the medion website all the drivers are for XP/vista.
But as wel all have come to learn vista is crap.

I did a driver detective run:
    Display adapters
Mobile intel(R) 945 Express Chipset Family

    IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
    Standard AHCI1.0 Serial ATA Controller

    Modems
    Motorola SM56 Data Fax Modem

    Network adapters
Realtek RTL8101E Family PCI-E Fast Ethernet NIC
    Realtek RTL8187B Wireless 802.11b/g 54Mbps USB 2.0 Network Adapter

    Other devices
    Base system-aparaat
    Base system-aparaat
    Base system-aparaat

    System devices
Mobile Intel(R) 955MX/945GM/PM/GMS/940GML Express Processor to DRAM controller

those base system devices, I have no idea what they are.

Usually, the unknown drivers on laptops are "special" things like the card reader or finger print scanner or something similar. Can you take a screenshot of your device manager so I can see wich drivers you either have a red sign on or a "!" sign on ? If it tells you the name you wrote above...the name of your network adapters, you should be able to connect to them no problem...meaning they are installed. However, the wireless one seems to be an USB adaptor ? Doesnt your laptop have built in wifi, or do you use a seperate USB card ?

Also, did you install something else than Windows Vista on t ? Some older laptops wont wok with Windows 7 drivers, or they are too lazy to update them

If you need drivers, go here http://www.medion.com/gb/service/download/driver.php

Enter "96290" in the full text search and hit enter. That will give you all the drivers for your model. If you are unsure of which ones you need, get them all and install them one by one. However, I would suggest you download and install the chipset drivers first and see if those arent the ones you need. After that, go for the card reader and the "special things"

well I tried one of those drivers before from the medion website, but it didn't work very well I think, because I am indeed using win7.
But This laptop is only aprox 4 years old.

There is only a yellow "!" sign next to the base system devices.
The location for those devices is PCI-bus 10, device 9, function, 2,3 and 4.

And yes it is a build in wifi, no usb, well.. thats weird.

  12. #12
4 years old is a long time in PC hardware terms, and Medion isnt exactly the most brilliant brand to update their drivers

But as to your problem, it does seem weird. You seem to have the drivers installed for both ethernet (cabled) and wifi, so other than having turned the wifi off with the hardware button, or needing some of the "base system devices" for it to work (which is unlikely I think), I dont know what the problem is.

Can you use a cable to get access ?

  13. #13
yes I can(did I forget to mention this? ), but I dont know at what point this started to work, i'm almost 100% sure that before the format it didn't work.
another thing that I probably should mention is that the button next to the wifi button gives a blue screen everytime I press it. I dont know why or when this started, but I nothised it yesterday evening when I was wondering if the button could be just not propperly connected, which it is btw =)

and medion.. last time I got something from them, not only is their driversupport really low, the laptops design is beyond bad.

  14. #14
The button next to the wifi button ? Is that seperate from the button you turn the wifi on/off with ?

  15. #15

you can see them between the keyboard and the screen, thats the buttons i'm talking about

Thats fine, but it didnt answer my question hehe. I need to know if the button you are talking about is the button you turn wifi on and off with. If it is, the problem could be with the software thats needed for those buttons.

Usually, its a button with no software (not anything you see anyway) you turn it on and off with (its usually a physical switch of some kind) - you simply turn the antenna on or off. But if this is handled by software, and is therefore built into the special buttons on the laptop, you might need the right drivers and those could very well be the system things you cant seem to find drivers for, and also those could be the ones that wont work under Windows 7.

  17. #17
the button that gives the blue screen is not the one for the wifi. but the wifi button doesn't work, and I have no idea how to figure out if it needs drivers or not.
But it already worked before under windows 7 :/.

Maby I should try to find a vista version and install the drivers on that, and then see if it works?

Likely the buttons don't work either due to a previous reformat or you've disabled bundled software from the laptop manufacturer (Quite often they're tied to programs running through Windows rather than directly controlling your hardware).#

    Network adapters
Realtek RTL8101E Family PCI-E Fast Ethernet NIC
Pretty common onboard NIC. Think my laptop has the same, actually. Try googling for drivers - laptop brand is irrelevant.

Also check your BIOS and see again if you have any options for "Onboard NIC" or similar, onboard devices, etc.

    onboard Lan: Enabled
    Onboard IEEE1394: enabled
    Default wireless device: disabled

got drivers from here, but theirs no exe file in it is it a bad driver file or am I missing something?

Just putting in my 2 cents. I used to work for 2 large US ISPs - and I have done PC repair for a long time - I have seen these NICs go (the on board and PCI style ones) - Did you have a storm or anything prior to it puking out.

The other option is it is a bios setting you are not seeing, because its not there. Try flashing your bios from the manufacture's website. most bios these days are a simple .exe that you download run reboot and tada, its worth a shot. And contrary to popular belief, most bios these days are very, very, very safe to upgrade, even if you get more warnings on a bios update then you do on a cup of McD's coffee these days.
