There is the essential problem where the US government is seen as the primary enforcer in the world, whether people are happy with it or not. Therefore, the actions of Americans are looked at with much more scrutiny, especially when it applies to third world countries. A US company that starts doing business with a third world country could easily be labeled as an extortionist, abusing the positions of those less fortunate for the purpose of money, even if it is in truth an even and consensual business transaction. An example of this scrutiny is the conflict between Israel and Iran. While the US is criticized heavily for its relationship with Israel, relatively little attention is paid to China's close endorsement and protection of Iran. The modern humanitarian aspect of large business, where the rich are expected to prove their "generosity" by donating to third world countries regularly, is also an issue, because it sets the standard that we should give to those countries, not do business with them. This means that most of this kind of trading is done by individuals and small businesses, which can't come close to the possible output of a large corporation.
As for a country consuming 30% of a product and only producing 3% of it.. based only on that, that is a massive product import, so overall it might be a massive loss of money within the country.
