    new skill and rune system for simple players to boost ah sales of items

    The main reason why Blizzard did change rune and skill system was because they were afraid it was too hard for players to understand. If runes were sellable items Blizzard was worried many players would not understand importance of them. and rather play without them or use only those runes that dropped to them.

    Now they can focus selling on items. Gear and pots in auction house. Selling piece of gear with different stats is easier concept for players to understand afterall. And key factor of success is that players are able to understand systems. We have seen many recent design choices of diablo 3 to bring it even more simplified version.
    Items gear and pots is something any player can easy understand. Players immediately understand how it does improve their gameplay to buy new gear with bigger stats. And it will increase changes player will buy or sell item on auction house.

    Or... they realized that with three thousand different runes out there, they'd either have to be commonplace enough that the auction house (and players' stashes) would be inundated with runes rendered worthless by their sheer volume, or they'd be rare enough that your playstyle is much less a function of how you prefer to play your character and more one of how lucky you were with drops.

    Having your power increase based on your luck is a core tenet of the game. Having your character's basic abilities left up to luck of the draw is rather less so.

    They changed it because the old system didn't work.....
