Bf3 on ultra? My old machine (AMD Tri core with a GTX460) runs BF3 on Ultra. That machine there is overkill. I still recommend you get it however

He either has a different definition of 'runs', or a different definition of 'ultra'.
Could mean ultra with a lower resolution and shadows/antialiasing/antistropic turned down, could mean fully ultra with less than 30 FPS.
An 'AMD tri core with a GTX460' will not run BF3 on the highest possible settings on 1920x1080

so will my setup then run it on ultra? or what do i need to upgrade?

As long as you're willing to lower AA slightly for a steady 60 you should be fine (might be fine without)
Upgrading the video card wouldn't hurt things, but isn't really necessary with current games unless you're a graphics whore who needs EVERYTHING turned up, including the things you won't notice anyways.
Also, the 2600k is overkill atm, the 2500k will preform the exact same in games. 2000GHz ram is overkill as well.

Processors: No need for an I7 2600K save your money and buy I5 2500 K oc it to 4.5 (money for GFX card saved here)
DDR3 memory: Go for 1600 mhz there is no real gain in having 2000mhz only then flushed money (money for GFX card saved here)
Grapich card: Don't go for the 580 you better of picking up the amd 7970 same price as 580 and 30% faster this card will get you 70-80 fps
    Harddrive SSD:Crucial M4 CT128M4SSD2 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD), 550MB/500MB/s read/write, SandForce® SF-2200, w/bracket
    Harddrive: Western

I recommend the HD 7950 instead of the 7970, it is a good bit cheaper and they're nearly identical performance wise... I'd do something like:

Part list permalink / Part price breakdown by merchant

    CPU: Intel Core i5-2500K 3.3GHz Quad-Core Processor ($199.99 @ NCIX US)
    Motherboard: ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3 ATX LGA1155 Motherboard ($129.86 @ Newegg)
    Memory: G.Skill Sniper Low Voltage Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($49.99 @ Newegg)
Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($129.99 @ Amazon)
    Hard Drive: Crucial M4 128GB 2.5" Solid State Disk ($159.99 @ Newegg)
Video Card: Gigabyte Radeon HD 7950 3GB Video Card ($479.99 @ NCIX US)
Case: NZXT Phantom (Black) ATX Full Tower Case ($129.99 @ Newegg)
    Power Supply: SeaSonic 620W ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply ($86.99 @ SuperBiiz)
    Optical Drive: Samsung SH-222AB DVD/CD Writer ($19.98 @ Newegg)
    Total: $1386.77
(Prices include shipping and discounts when available.)

I like note builds there solid/cheap
For the card if you want to spend the extra money go for if you want a cheaper and close to same performance the 7950 is just as good only 10% less in performance. Bud it will run BF3 smooth as butter its your wallet

You're welcome. =) And: it will run everything on Ultra.

One last suggestion: you may wanna consider adding a CPU Cooler like the Corsair A70 for $25, that way you can overclock.

No, it doesn't since 1920 isn't my monitors native resolution (Nor is it capable of it). So yeah, it does at 1440x900. Unfortunately it's one aprt i've not upgraded yet. And we're talking very rarely dipping under 60fps, though to be fair it's an overclocked Black Edition phenom.

That's because 1440x900 is very low resolution, five year old PCs shouldn't have problems running any games at that resolution. Bump your computer up to 1920x1080 and watch it crawl at Ultra, probably even High.

I honestly wouldn't say that out loud, yes he won't run Ultra @ 1080p but i can see him doing High.

The AMD Phenom II X3 720BE is a VERY sweet CPU and does not dissappoint, yes Intel has the high ground ofcourse, but it is not a weakling if it's OCed in BF3.
