    Overclocking questions

    hi guys

I'm thinking of buying a Noctua NH-D14 and overclock my i5 2500k cpu.

i got 2 questions though i would like some help with.

    1. how much extra power does overclocking need? (know it depends on how much i overclock but a base number would be nice)

    2. i found a guide on overclock.net which shows how to overclock to 4.0GHz and 4.5GHz and i was wondering if i should start out with the 4.0GHz guide and bump it up later or just go for the 4.5GHz?

    link to the guides: clunk.org.uk/forums/overclocking/39184-p67-sandy-bridge-overclocking-guide-beginners.html

I'm new to this overclocking so any help will be appriciated.

~30W more or so. You can go for 4.5 and make sure it is stable and temps are okay, worst case is a BIOS reset and trying something lower.

You can obtain 4.5 GHz on a 2500K without so much as a voltage bump. When I ran at 4.5 GHz I used an offset of -.005V just because a value of 0 means "Auto" (aka not recommended) in Asus's UEFI. Some other settings such as LLC might cause your load voltages to be a little higher, but not significantly. A 4.5GHz OC without a voltage bump would probably result in your entire system consuming less than 15W more.
