tiers will be based on PvE content, arena season sets have more freedom.

Though I've nothing class specific, I'm just thinking of some of the influences Blizzard has to choose from with the Oriental theme:

    - Samurai
    - Dragons
    - Ninjas
    - Buddha
    - Tigers
    - Nogaku
    - Astrology
    - Lotus flowers
    - Geisha
    - Chinese fans
    - Bonsai

I wouldn't be surprised if they branches out of the Asian theme and even went with Indian influences too. I would really like to see that.

IMO ninjas are pretty much a certain thing for rogues, since there's the shado-pan pandaren clan of ninjas.

Why must every Tier be based on something these days? Why not just make an original good looking set, or is that too hard?
Have they simply lost inspiration and the easiest option is to base Tiers on certain enemies?

Most sets from vanilla and TBC weren't based on mobs, I prefer that approach.

blizzard probably came to the realization that since we adquire PVE gear from enemies, that gear must probably look like something enemies would wear (or pieces of their bodies). while we buy tier sets from a vendor, we do so by handing them things we got in the raid, and it's possible they make the tier with those items.

it doesn't make much sense for a faceless to drop a doomguard-themed chestplate, does it?

that's why they base PvE gear on PvE content and leave the "freedom of theme" to PvP gear

it's funny you mentioned warlocks and vanilla/BC. let me break your convictions a little:

dungeon sets 1 and 2 were based on the necromancer outfit from WC3. since we get them in stratholme/scholomance (among other places), it IS based on the enemies.

tier sets 3 was based in the plague, used by the scourge to spread undeath. it was adquired in naxx so it WAS based on enemies.

tier set 4 was based on voidwalkers. while warlocks do summon voidwalkers, the type represented in the set are the stronger ones with shoulderpads only seen as enemies, not the summonable kind. so it IS based on enemies.

Tier set 5 was based on WC2 orcish death knights like teron gorefiend. they were warlock souls inside dead human knight bodies. so it IS based on enemies.

Tier set 6 was based on demons in general. though warlocks summon demons, the fact that most big villains in the expansion were demons is heavy. so in a way, it IS based on enemies.

where is your vanilla/BC god now?

the only tier sets not based on enemies were the t1 and t2.

I'm just hoping that the Druid tiers don't look too much like T5/T8, as they both used similar plants-on-shoulders, zodiac-al headdress philosophy.

I think blizzard can make japanese armor sets wornable by pandaren. if the chinese people feel panda people with japanese armor fit, they'll transmog and that's it.

the ocident has been exagerating a lot about the japan-china relationship. some time ago I read some news about a japanese porn actress offering her body as compensation for japan's war crimes to chinese studants who were studying in japan.

now if chinese students can go study in japan, they aren't so angry at each other anymore like that. china was also the biggest destination for japanese exports in 2009.

now differently from the WC3 early pandaren, the WoW pandaren will have it's culture completely based on the chinese culture. but if the players decide to dress they pandaren as a japanese warrior, it's not blizz's problem, but the player's.
I want to add to this. I don't want to shoot you down, I just write so much because it's kinda a topic I can relate to ;p
    (maybe tl/dr, but *shrug*)

The China vs Japan issue is still present, a sensible topic on many levels, among them marketing.

I've been a couple of times in China, studied in beijing, worked a short time in Shanghai etc. An ex-girlfriend of mine sadly had such a bad opinion of Japanese, it bordered to racism. I encountered this sentiment pretty often, it's still pretty widespread, especially among the more conservative population (which is not necessarily only old people!). Ofc there's other opinions too, another chinese friend studies Japanese

I had some lessons about "management/marketing in China". This here surfaced multiple times during the years as a top example of unwise marketing, Toyota commercial in China:

The text is something like "you have to respect that!" (my mandarin is shoddy and I'm lazy, just out of my memory ). The chinese lion pair is a symbol of chinese power, in older history representing the power of the chinese emperor (and empress). A symbol of the state. Note that it is saluting here (that's basically the gag of the commercial).

The chinese HATED the commercial. It got blown down HARD by public opinion. Parodies as this were common:

("you can only... smash it under your paw... or something" god it's good that teacher can't see me T.T''' )

Also, this Nike TV commercial was publicly blown down.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q22VEviS-Os
Because 1) he defeats the elder Kung-Fu master (in basketball...)
    2) he defeats "evil" (impossibrew!) chinese dragons (in basketball.......)
There's also politics involved. The chinese dragon and Lion can count as national symbols, and the Chinese Communist Party can make use of a law which forbids these in commercials (just like the chinese flag, the party symbol or the national anthem). But the party is very moody on this, you can't be sure they'll forbid every commercial for just having dragons in it, it's for them to decide how they feel if that particular piece of media hurts the national pride or not.

Now with resentment towards Japan still being very common amongst the chinese population, the whole gear/style thing is definitely a big issue, a true minefield.
WoW can be happy it has so much access to the chinese market as it has today (I think they got there around TBC time, got forbidden inbetween, and then allowed again).
The wrong mix of Japanese themes and styles with Pandaren would be as bad as a wrong mix of jewish and german symbols (whatever that might be... Vrykul with rabbi hat and rabbi curls? Are Vikings german?? Is that a good example???)

Let's just say, there's historical ballast here, and it's still intensely felt.

But I admire you warlocks for this! You are not pets! You take all the evil ancient horrors hell throws at you, face it down, show that you can master it, control it, use it for your own means and throw it right back at the darkness! You guys kick ass, be proud of that legacy!

I'm a hunter. I skin faces and wear them like a mask. Works too.

    I KNOW RIGHT.

Blizzard needs to remind their tier designers that Warlock=DEMON Magic.

    D. E. M. O. N.

Not generic evil, not spooky, not emo, fucking DEMON.

    t1, t4, t6, t5, t9 (Horde) are almost PERFECT for a warlock
t10, t8, t2 were also FANTASTIC since they evoked dark mage, it was a clear caster set in "evil" garb

t11,t12,t13,t3/7 while good tiers (hey I like t11) are not warlocky
t13 has NOTHING to do with Warlocks

    It upsets me

you lack imagination, young one. while warlocks summon demons, their theme is that they find a huge power beyond comprehention that has thousands of servants and stuff like that. and than they master it, and make that power their own. they become the greater of the two evils.

in MoP locks are getting two interesting new spells: Twilight Ward (that replaces shadow ward) and Malefic Grasp (that binds the target in "twilight". the icon looks like something from tentacle anime)

what does it mean? it's simple: we beat the twilight cult and their old god stuffs and made that power our own. what does it matter if it's not a demon? power is power! and that's what warlocks are trully after. not just demons, but power.

demons are easy to summon and they are quite powerful, so they are kind of a "shortcut for power" lol

No, the entire point of Warlock is that it uses demon magic.

Warlocks are former arcanists, or in the case of the orcs, former shamans, who, in pursuit of ever-greater sources of power, have cast off their studies of the arcane or nature magics to delve deeper into the darker, fel-based magic of shadow.

In the face of demonic power, most heroes see death. Warlocks see only opportunity. Dominance is their aim, and they have found a path to it in the dark arts. These voracious spellcasters summon demonic minions to fight beside them. At first, they command only the service of imps, but as a warlock’s knowledge grows, seductive succubi, loyal voidwalkers, and horrific felhunters join the dark sorcerer’s ranks to wreak havoc on anyone who stands in their master’s way.

    Fel. DEMON.

Not Old God. Not Sha. Not Necromancy.

No, they're from the Scandinavian countries, far north of Germany. Only relatively a sliver of germany actually touches a sea.

And again, I've said this before in a similar thread; Just give the japanese armor to the Mantid. They're obviously "china's" enemies. I'm sure a " chinese" warrior (pandaren) pilfering a samurai's corpse for his fancy hat in an MMORPG isnt going to turn too many heads.

if old god power > demon power, do you think a warlock will ignore it jut because it's not demon power?

Israel would probably "applaud" you if you made Nazi jews. With a very lowly aimed gun salute. But combining generic "german" and jewish symbols is unlikely to get much of an reaction, especially not from german jews.
