For My Roommate, Need Suggestions for a Full Computer Build

My roommate is looking to completely replace his computer, no salvageable parts.

Needs everything included in the build besides Headset/Mouse/Keyboard/Monitor.

If its not too much work can you include a build that is for a budget max of $1,500 as well as one for $2,000.

I believe his current monitor is 1680/1050 something or other.

He will use this comp for:
    -Gaming at max settings.
    -Frapsing at max settings (hopefully).

He plays WoW/SC 2/Diablo 3, and would like this comp to run any game/MMO that could come out this year pretty flawlessly if possible.

    Thanks in advance,

    Branden

They post computer builds on the front page that are pretty good. I don't know how often they post them or when the last one was just just go back a couple pages and check them out. They have good builds for decent prices.
Check out my game, Craftsmith, on the Google Play Store!

@MrKnubbles, Not sure if that is really what he is asking :P

I'd suggest that your roommate has a look at Marest's sample builds http://www.mmo-champion.com/threads/...-Sample-Builds

The below suggestions are taken from the link above, I've made a few changed to the builds for my own preference

    Hard Drive: Crucial M4 128GB 2.5" Solid State Disk ($152.99 @ Adorama)
Video Card: Gigabyte Radeon HD 7950 3GB Video Card ($479.99 @ NCIX US)

    Optical Drive: Sony AD-7280S-0B DVD/CD Writer ($18.99 @ Newegg)
    Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (64-bit) ($99.99 @ Newegg)
    Total: $1463.76

    $2000 Build
Part list permalink / Part price breakdown by merchant
    CPU: Intel Core i5-2500K 3.3GHz Quad-Core Processor ($179.99 @ Microcenter)
CPU Cooler: Corsair CAFA70 61.0 CFM CPU Cooler ($29.99 @ NCIX US)
    Motherboard: ASRock P67 Extreme4 Gen3 ATX LGA1155 Motherboard ($158.49 @ Newegg)
    Memory: Mushkin Blackline 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($49.99 @ Newegg)
Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($134.99 @ SuperBiiz)
    Hard Drive: Crucial M4 256GB 2.5" Solid State Disk ($318.00 @ B&H)
Video Card: Asus Radeon HD 7970 3GB Video Card ($579.99 @ Amazon)
Case: Fractal Design Arc Midi Tower ATX Mid Tower Case ($99.99 @ NCIX US)
    Power Supply: SeaSonic 660W ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply ($174.98 @ NCIX US)
    Optical Drive: Sony AD-7280S-0B DVD/CD Writer ($18.99 @ Newegg)
    Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (64-bit) ($99.99 @ Newegg)
    Total: $1845.39

Note: Not a huge difference between the two - just a larger SSD, slightly better MoBo/GPU/RAM, and fully modular PSU in the second build.

Edit: He's gonna want a new monitor to take advantage of his new build - the resolution of his current monitor is terrible. I suggestion something like this for the $1500 build: Monitor: Asus VE228H 21.5" Monitor ($129.99 @ NCIX US) and this for the $2000 build: Monitor: LG E2360V-PN 23.0" Monitor ($197.99 @ Amazon). I seriously cannot stress this part enough: he is wasting his money if he doesn't get a newer monitor that can support 1920x1080 (at least).

Difference from build A to build B:

    - Better GPU
    - extra storage for fraps and black edition
    - Motherboard with extra connectors like USB 3.0 for your front panel.
    - Fully modular PSU with enough power for future Crossfire
    - Different case (love the 600T)
    - Quieter and great performing CPU heatsink

Build A is quite good, build B just gives you that little bit if extra oomph.

Notarget does your case recommendation have a 2.5 bay for the SSD or would he need a bracket?

  10. #10
Both of the cases Notarget recommended have 2.5" compatible HDD bays, as does the Fractal Design Arc Midi that I recommended.

Ok awesome thank you, will he need a thermal compound when mounting the heatsink?

  12. #12
It ultimately depends on which heatsink he buys... I know, for a fact, that the Corsair A70 comes with a tube of thermal compound, and I'm guessing the HAVIK does as well (most do, I believe).
