You always had a crew in Knights Of The Old Republic. Yes you could go out without them, but you usually didn't want to. The way I looked at it they were just going back to that aspect of the older games.
I think you will have an extremely hard time getting to 50 without one of your companions. That is unless you allways are 3-5 levels above content. Even with healing companion and Juggernaut - I get face raped by larger packs with 1 silver mob. It just gets harder and harder. And as someone mentioned - it is good training to get your group feeling activated. Tanking with a healer, healing with a tank/DPS etc, etc. You allso want to do the romance bit of the game - and then you need your companion out to give them gifts, and get bonus affection from quests etc.
I enjoy having the companions, it also gives you something else to do at level cap aka gearing them up. Classes like Assassins/Shadows are nice as there last/best companion uses the same gear they do. On my Jugg I've just been gearing up Quinn(Healer) with Centurion/Champion leftover commendations![]()
I brought this up here when I first started playing the game as well. I still think this an area where BW royally F'd up. I liked companions in Mass Effect, but that is where they should have stayed. Seems to only add to the anti-epicness of the game since I have no real want or need to bone my companion. I would have been quite happy with there being one mob instead of packs of three and going mano-a-mano (like wow, rift, etc...) or them keeping the packs of three and being more a badass that didn't need a companion.
...Either learn to enjoy playing every class as a 'pet class'; like a hunter in WoW...
...Or don't use the companion and have a real challenge in leveling...
Once you reach level 50 you don't use them for anything but crafting and dailies (they aren't coming to raids or WZ's with you). As far as helping you to play a specific roll...I dunno about that. My healer companion after level 30 (as Shadow dps) is fairly OP as the companion keeps my health up and has a short duration stun that allows me to backstab mobs. I have zero downtime unless I overpull by quite a bit.
I wouldn't even attempt at playing without companions -
In most action movies, tv shows, comics, and games there are Sidekicks/Companions.
Many classes(if not all) can handle a pack of 3 on their own, provided the pack doesn't have multiple strong enemies.
The downside is, your health is gonna be lower at the end of the fight, you don't have your companion requiring "oh shit" button to use, and you'll have to be really careful to make sure you don't pull extra mobs while you fight.
Companion is optional as is ur gear . U can play the game naked without any gear on but will make things harder. The quests are also made so that u have more fun while playing with ur companion. You can do solo stuff tho no worries but what is the point in increasing the skill cap for no benefit?![]()

Simply put, it will become very evident very quickly that without their added support you will not progress in a timely manner.

I thought I should update my thread, I´ve leveled up some lvls and I´ve changed my mind about companions. I enjoys playing with them. They´re not your pet, more like they´re your best friends and sidekick.
Companions are not pets! (LOL just saw what you posted XD )
They're actually pretty good at whatever role you set them to (most have 2 settings). They're meant to complement your chosen AC/spec and they do it well. You will want them at your side at some point.
Also, companions cannot "face pull" so you don't have to micromanage them when they're fighting/helping at range. This one little fact has saved my ass so many times!
^ The above should be taken with two grains of salt and a fistful of "chill the F* out".
