So I got a little impatient....

Ok so I never played diablo 1 or 2 and I got a little curious so I just bought it for 10 bucks from the blizzard store.

I realize the game is like 11 years old so I was wondering on a scale from 1-10, how disappointed am I going to be. :P

    Kind of a personal/subjective question...

Personally, I don't think D2 ever held up well. The game was great for a bit, but I find it really hard to play, even 5 or so years ago, because it looks so horrible...

I recommend you play some Titan's Quest, if you want newer (but not as good looking, or as feature/variety rich), try Torchlight...

I would definitely recommend trying Torchlight.

While D2 is a wonderful game, I just can't get past how terrible the graphics are. The god-awful resolutions just make it look even worse.

^I don't think I can possibly stress how much I disagree with these guys, especially on the graphics.

Both titles are some of the best games you'll ever have the pleasure to play. I personally prefer DII but the communitys pretty split.

I also can't wrap my head around "it looks so horrible..." The graphics are actually quite beautiful and well-done. In Diablo 2 there are some brilliant and absolutely remarkable aesthetics, and most of the same applies to 1.

Thanks for reminding me OP, I'm gonna go download D2 immediately.

Edit: This video shows a lot of the cool concepts they used to do things far beyond the time the game was made.

I've never played diablo 2, I played diablo 1 on the playstation years ago, I thought it was complete rubbish and a blatant Gauntlet rip off. Everything was too dark it felt like I was getting eye strain, far too much sorting through inventory crap and mediocre game play with aweful graphics even for it's time. Was slightly pissed off for dumping £30 on it, however my brother and his mate used to spend hours on it so it wasn't a complete waste of money.

Diablo 3 so far looks awesome, so much so that I'm buying a new PC to see the game at it's best.

Both games are definitely worth playing through once. The storylines are amazing and will quickly draw you in. Diablo 2 is consistently one of the highest rated games.

Yes, the graphics are very dated, so try to not be too judgmental of the games just on that.

D2 won't even run properly on my computer. I get strange colour stripes through the screen - and that's after about 6 hours of trying to get it to run on Win 7 - the problems are reported with my graphics card - so unfortunately it's pretty unplayable. But for that price, if it runs, then I think you won't regret picking it up especially if you haven't played it before. My husband played my copy that I couldn't get going properly, on WinXP and his graphics card didn't bug at all. He played the entire game through and got a good 20 hours playtime out of it and really enjoyed it.

I did play it extensively back in the day though and it was an unbelievable game If it runs fine, definitely play them both through for the storyline.

D2 easily the best game ever created as far as playability. I have probably poured years of my life into it, WoW can't even compare.

Not being able to get past the graphics of a game makes me kind of laugh I'll be honest. How much do you stand to potentially miss out on because of vanity.

I did the same thing as you did about a year ago to play with my friends who said it was awesome. They who had played it before were used to the bad graphics and the whole playstyle, but i who had never played it before wasn't. D3 looks like an awesome game but i just couldn't get into D2.

Very personal and subjective perspective depending heavily on how much you like those kind of games (hack'n'slash).

    Diablo 1
    pros:
    + base game
    + various classes
+ random dungeon generator, never enter same dungeon so no "I did turn here left and exit on my Barbarian so the same with Sorcerer"
+ lots of various demons to slaugher
+ "mature" (blood and gore) plus it has its climate

    cons:
    - really outdated graphic
    - controls may feel...weird (fixed camera and character always in center)
    - low bag space and often village visits to dump stuff
    - may be boring in a long term

    Diablo 2:
    pros:
    + base game and expansion
+ more characters to play (Druid/Assassin from x-pac)
+ V Act (addition to main 4 from base game)
+ better graphics (but still quite old compared to current)
    + rally nice story
    + awesome music

    cons:
    - may be boring in long term
    - at first you feel weak but later...

Overall both games were (and for me are still) great ones. I recently re-played them and enjoyed. If you won't expect much GFX fireworks and focus on story and immersion you won't be disappointed much. It's a really nice stress-eater. So if you bought them, give a try and play. Don't think about how great/bad it should be. Just play.

If you want to have a taste of Diablo 2 then play Diablo 2, NOT Torchlight. Seriously they forgot to add everything good about Diablo and left only turd as a game.

If you are into going into dungeons 24/7 then you should try torchlight.

If you want some outdoor exploration and a lovely bunch of mythology added, Titan Quest is amazing.

I play D2 in windowed mode, everything looks so stretched in widescreen mode. Especially cosidering D2 doesn't go higher yhan 800x600.
But the gameplay is simply amazing.

This is pretty much the way I feel about it.

In it's day, D1 was a good game. Very addictive and more than fun. Same with D2 and it's expansion. In it's day it was good. Smooth play, very good story and decent enough graphics.

Looking at them now I'm shocked you even paid $10 for them.

You want a great looking dungeon crawler, try Torchlight (and Torchlight 2 in the next coming months.)

I didn't get the chance to play Titan Quest but I hear nothing but good things about it.

As far as going back to D1 or D2 +E - For me that wont ever happen. There just to dated but at one point - they were good.

Titan quest is a heap of shit. Get past level 20 and come tell me how 'Great' titans quest is, or even the xpac Immortal Throne. I fell for the same fan boy shit and purchased the game for 30 bucks. It is horrible. Itemization is trash, replayability is trash. I have a feeling the people saying 'Try Titan Quest' are people who never played it. I had to make myself finish it.

Titan Quest is one of the worst D2 impersonators out there. Avoid at all costs. Try torchlight. Its engine is far superior to TQ in about 10k ways

I 100% agree, graphics don't make a great game. d2 is my top favorite game.

Titan Quest replayability comes from large amount of class combinations. I don't know what's wrong with the itemization in the game, but it's not that different from Diablo 2. Titan Quest had some great settings and music, loved the China arc, the story is not too bad either.

On the other hand, Torchlight had nothing that resembles a storyline that I can care about, until it does, it's not even worth 4.99 during steam sale, imo.

I feel the same way about Diablo 3

Don't listen to anyone who suggests Torchlight. Its a total crap of a game. It is fun for about the first hour. Diablo 2's graphics may not be as good as Torchlight, but everything else in Diablo 2 is 10000000x better.

The millions of copies of Torchlight sold would like to have a word with you. While Torchlight is definately not as good as D2 IMO. Its not crap. The sales and continued sales prove that false. Torchlight is a great d-crawler, it is missing some heavy difficulty and multi player, which is why the above poster may deem it crap. Other than that, its a good game and the engine runs flawlessly on older machines, and it looks great.
