    Mesmer Discussion Thread

Might as well create a Mesmer discussion thread, since every other class is getting one .

I for one can't wait to roll a mesmer, mainly because they just seem so different from the typical archetype classes. Plus the fact that they can destroy their enemies with nothing but butterflies and pink laser beams, is also a huge plus for me.

My only (minor) complaint of the mesmer class, is the fact that their elite skills seems slightly underwhelming ATM, in comparison to the elite skills of other classes.

And here I was thinking that the warrior elites were underwhelming. Haven't looked at the mesmer elites because I'm bad at paying attention to videos, but I'll take your word for it.
Also, I lyke illusionz. Can't wait for my mesmer.
will probably spend a lot of time in PvE being a melee mesmer, depending on how melee VS ranged balances out. (I heard some complains about melee being annihilated when they actually went into melee range against a group of enemies, but we'll see how it turns out.) and depending how weaponswappy PvE will be (since the mesmer doesn't really have many melee options, so being full melee with a mesmer would be difficult. Sword/sword/staff, perchance, for the buffs/debuffs? Who knows.)

Time Warp is the only Elite Skill that appeals to me, the other 2 are more suitable for PvP

Tomoko Eternal Life, Kilik Eternal Sun, Eira Frozen Hearted, Ashara Emberlight,
Vuug The Deceiver, Grash Gravebuilder, Asgaut Divine Soul, Lera Dreamstealer

I just looked the elites up.. I giggled pretty hard at Moa Morph.
Guessing it's like a long duration stun that you can't break out of? I saw someone use it on a thief in PvP, but I wasn't sure if it was some kind of thief skill.
Like.. a feign death type thing for PvE that he decided to use in PvP in a 1v1.
Because that would be a hilarious feign death.

It's 10 seconds, not bad for PvP.. horrible for PvE unless...

Moa bird can be really useful in PvE, let's take the ghost couple in ascalon, they are both ranged so its hard to split them apart. Assuming they arn't immune this skill will be handy.

Also if this turns into omg mesmer is the new minion master necro GW1 I'm going to bug blood till he locks this thread -.-. It has similarities but its far from a traditional minion master since clones aren't a reliable source of damage or a meat blocker with its low health and shattering (damage) has a CD unlike death nova.

    Ban Hammer =/= Spam

    Good luck :>

on a more serious note, there will be situations where every spell in the game would come in handy, I meant in the overall way, but you're right though, you can switch skills before going into battle so in this particular fight it's helpful.

Who said anything about spam? I'll just dangle a chicken in front of your face or take away your buttered toast.

I see time warp useful for add fights where you want to spam a lot of skills to kill off the adds and moa bird for oh shit situations where a team member might die. Let's hope bosses are not immune though but I don't think they are since knockdowns and such work (unless boss is doing some kind of mega attack).

    I think the Moa spell in this situation;

Me and my friend are playing the game while talking on Skype. I'm a Warrior and let's say he's the Mesmer, after a big battle I'm near death and I try to run away, so I can heal up. Before I could use my healing spell, a Minotaur rushes towards me. I'm screaming; "Help Minotaur." He'd be like; "Nope, Chuck Moa".

It really is. But it is oddly cute in a creepy way.

I actually like the Mesmer elites. Like the Mesmer itself, the elites are subtle; they are not flashy but they definitely get the job done. Granting myself/my party stealth, transforming any enemy into a "harmless" bird or Time Warp? I am learning towards Timewarp, but the Moa bird might come out on top in both PvE and PvP circumstances. Especially if it works on the harder elites.

Sorry to step into this but it has actually lots of similiarities with death magic Necro as we said in the Mesmer in beta thread.
The minions of Necro aren't a reliable source of damage either, unless you use barbs, mark of pain or order of the undeath. Thing is they're a diversion (a different form of diversion I give you that) just like the clones.
With death nova you've to put it individualy in each minion hence no cooldown, Mind Wrack blows all clones and phantasms at once, it only has a cooldown of 10 sec which is lower than most clone skills plus you got other aways to shatter, giving indirect damage.
This new Mesmer is more different from the original one that it is from Necro.

I disagree, Mesmer is hardly relate able to minion master, and it is more mesmer then people think.

    Vid of minion master: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8dWmuwR8Zg

As you see in the video, the minions are being a meat blocker and main source of damage. They aren't a true distraction, take out the source (the necromancer) and you are pretty much golden, though mobs can't figure that out. Clones on the other hand are exact replicas of yourself that drop the foes target, they are meant to be literal distractions. They hardly produce damage or meatblocking. The shatters are more utility, in a pinch? Use the stun shatter, need some extra pressure? Sacrifice the minimal damage clones to do some real damage.

Now let's go back to Mesmer GW1, mesmer in GW1 is all about confusion, controlling your enemy, hindering your enemy, having the enemy kill itself and energy starving. Since the old energy system is gone we can't do that anymore but everything else is still here in a different form.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Ether_Bolt - Ether bolt, it's a energy blast that causes confusion. What does confusion do? It deals damage to enemys that attack. Confusion retakes empathy and backfire, 2 main spells in GW1 mesmer.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Chaos_Storm - Chaos storm, still has the same function as the original except it gives more control via conditions (conditions consist of confusion, freezing, increasing the recharge time of skills (Something mesmer interrupts did), doing damage over time (phantasm), and a variety of other things.). Also in a sense people will try and dodge out of chaos storm draining energy meaning less dodging.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Confusing_Images - This baby causes blindness something strong suited to a mesmer in GW1 via ineptitude and blinding snow.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Trick_Shot_%28mesmer%29 - Not only does this baby also inflict blindness and a stun, it also inflicts daze which interrupts and prevents skills being used for a short time (something GW1 mesmer also had with complicate and clumsiness and power lock)

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Cry_of_Frustration - Another reference to empathy and backfire.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Ether_Feast - The same as the old ether feast but no energy drain because the old energy is gone.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Time_Warp - Oh look time warp, it gives quickness which is from Celestial haste form GW1

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Illusionary_Warlock - This phantasm does damage for each condition on the target, you know what else did that? Fragility from GW1

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Illusionary_Wave - A knockdown, we had this via signet of clumsiness but now its an aoe knockdown!

I could continue with the list If I so choose, however saying that GW2 mesmer is closer to minion master form GW1 over the traditional mesmer I will not agree with because its quite clear you never played a mesmer. Having a limited 3 clones/phantasm which do more utility then anything else and being able to sacrifice them for more utility is nothing close to a traditional minion master.

As I said, a different form of distraction, minions bodyblock, clones divert.

Yeah, backfire, empathy, visions of regret are present in confusion, same with spiteful spirit, insidious parasite, spoil victor with curses and blood Necro.
Thing is with confusion you either attack and take damage or don't attack, it's like having a Mesmer with just backfire/empathy and nothing else revolving around this skills.
With the GW Mesmer (which by the way was my main in GW, I've played it for 6 years, though only 2 or 3 years in pve) if you hex someone with backfire and the foe didn't cast spells you just apply wastrel's worry/wastrel's demise forcing the foe to choose. Foe didn't cast anything? Took wastrel's damage. Foe did cast? It's a spell dangerous to you? Interrupt it. Isn't dangerous? well, took the backfire's magic. This kind of mind games simply doesn't exist in GW2 Mesmer.

As for your arguments with the skills examples, they're fallacious, I could give you examples how they reflect other professions aswell.

The same can be applied to all professions.
