If you don't know the mechanics of DotA, then you don't know how to play Warcraft 3. Warcraft 3 has included manual with the game and has one in-game. The rest of the stuff in dota, spells, lake runes and items, are each described in their tool-tips.
and they added enough help with the achievements with stuff like "use four wooden planks to make a crafting bench" or "use sticks and cobblestone to make a pickaxe" that a bit of experimentation in a 3x3 grid should be enough on the basic recipes.
only stuff like cake, pistons, enchanting tables, and brewing are particularly tough to figure out.
Citation needed. Until providing a source this is just an unfounded opinion.
How would these people who didn't buy the game because of a lack of information in the game know about the lack of information in the first place unless they bought the game? You've presented a paradox, unless these people actually researched the game to find out about the lack of information, in which case they surely would have stumbled upon the information which they felt was missing, thus removing their reason for not buying the game.
Well one issue with minecraft is without prior knowledge or guides. How would you know what is possible to make. How would you know flint steel existed in game, sheers, etc. These are useful in the 'actual' game play and aren't an aesthetic thing. A lot of stuff in minecraft aren't explained, and unless you data mined it out, you wouldn't even know how to do. Especially nether portals.

It tells you to invokelist when you pick invoker. There's also the huge map mechanics guide on the site you download dota from.
http://www.playdota.com/mechanics
or you could enable hints for your hero during the game
