Managed to squeeze 2.5 days out of mine, with very minimal usage.

    So, random computer question time:

My mother's computer is ridiculously slow (she says it's specific to the internet), and she's pretty ignorant about computers. She's got a really old (10 year old?) computer, running Win XP. She uses IE, no anti-virus, and is complaining that her computer is really slow. I am an advocate of just reformatting, but she's against it (I can understand why, but it's a quick and painless process, imo, after backing stuff up)...what types of things can I do to speed it up? Would simply swapping from IE to Chrome speed it up? Even if it's a little bit, it's welcome. I get the feeling she's going to be against downloading and installing any programs...

I ran a speed test, and all is good there.

Those people can't be reasoned with. Just do it anyway and tell her its for the best.

IE to Chrome actually isn't a bad idea, try that.

But as Methanar said, someone who is using a 10 yr old system, no AV? No way they can be reasoned with, that thing's on it's last legs. Reformat, use a newer faster HDD if you have any lying around. Not much can be done to speed up ancient drives. And get an AV installed, any of the common ones will do, doesn't matter if it's free or not.

Oh, and the kicker: she doesn't perform Windows Updates, either. She says it messes with her e-mail (a really old version of Outlook, I think?), so I'm sure the computer is totally secure. >.>

If she only uses it for internet she could take advantage of chrome's cloud service which saves the browsinghistory and logindata so yeah I don't really see why she wouldn't let you format the pc if all her stuff are saved to google chrome.

Her main concern is her e-mail. I use Gmail, so I don't really know how hers works, but it's not online, so she'd loose all her e-mails if it was reformatted. Everything else, such as music and photos could easily be thrown on an external.

Outlook should allow you to save all the emails to a back-up location.

So I decided to build myself a file server, something about having 3 HDD's externally attached to the computer annoys me.

Neat. I'll have to look into that. I've currently installed MSE, it's up-to-date, and I'm full scanning atm. Next step, after that is installing Chrome. If that doesn't help, I think I'm going to back up and reformat.

Lol yeah, having 500gb+ of games doesn't really help at all, plus music and whatnot. I'm glad that the HDD prices are somewhat down these days, 2TB for about $90ish.

older generations do not see the merit in upgrading, they have computer, it works, why buy a new one?

i got around this by swapping my mom's computer out with a new one without asking

it's better to ask for forgiveness than for permission

Yeah, I have zero expendable money.

MSE only detected a KeyGen on something she never used (I know this for a fact; it was acquired when she got some music from someone IRL she/we trust). I installed Chrome with Adblock and it appears, from limited browsing, that it's far faster than IE was...but she says she doesn't want to change from IE. I was like '...really?'

90$? Thats not too bad, I remember getting a 1Tb one for 90$ when the prices started to go to hell but the add was still on the site so I was really lucky...with all things considering:].

Don't be that guy. At least it's better than Firefox or Safari. (But then again, so is the common rock)
I'd also personally use it over Chrome without a doubt, and only Opera bests it in my book.

Let chrome just export IE settings/private data. I don't really understand why you wouldn't use a hotmail or a gmail. Convince her to make her use a webmail like gmail it's just so much easier than using office outlook.
