I feel your pain. Escaping is always a bitch because implementations vary. What works in say grep can't be counted on to work in vim or Swift. You can test a regex in a Python or PERL REPL and discover it doesn't even compile in Golang. Its doubly annoying when people write shit not even knowing what implementation is running and you get "works on my system" when it blows up. Then you have to spend an hour figuring out that the GNU regex library added "\` and \'" to match start/end of string because apparently the standard ones aren't good enough. Fuck you Benoit.

In my mind I stick to POSIX regular expressions so my rule of thumb is "escape all opening braces, single character quantifiers, anything, beginning, end, pipe, escape, and closing parenthesis." Everything else is wrong according to the spec so it's easy to know you're doing the right thing.

Whenever I do something "cool" with regular expressions I end up costing somebody else way more time than I saved writing it so it's really hard to justify doing anything clever. I feel like PCRE should be something every 'professional' programmer knows (like complexity theory or linear systems) but it ends up being this bit of arcane knowledge that people kind of understand and always hate. Its like puking a bit of inline assembly into your program: nobody wants to see that because it means they've got half an hour of work to decipher 50 characters.

I never get to use my favourite features of regex and have even had other good programmers "optimize away" my simple performance optimization (for example, dropping an atomic capture group) to make it "more readable" but 1000x slower. Look around with conditional branch reset capture groups might as well be fucking magic as far as anybody is concerned. I do wish more people learned about 'free-space mode' and used comments when they try to be clever.

Beer of the same brand in Taiwan is bizarrely different and worse. Say Asahi, whether you like it or not, it tastes worse in Taiwan for some bizarre reason.

I'm great at 'massively parallel' programming and have a bit of love for linear algebra. I dislike 'consumer technology' and prefer to work on important 'big iron' stuff. A small team implementing state-of-the-art algorithms is a good use of my abilities. Also, the difference in the kind of house I can afford within a 30-minute drive to work in Toronto vs Montreal is pretty extreme.

I'm going to fly up and have a chat in a couple of weeks. I'm a little concerned because I've only seen 2 films in the last 10 years and I hated both of them. I'm sure the "Why do you want to work on movies" question will come up and I have no good answer. I just want to write interesting code and this is a problem space that can probably hold my attention for a while.
Damn the cost of living between the two cities is massive haha. Honestly working on a project like that sounds pretty fun, but man the cost of living alone I'd make the jump.

Computer stuff be cheaper here in Taiwan.
They're usually near USD MSRP but tax already included.
    Though I'll be buying nothing.

Please keep my area in your thoughts/prayers tonight, we've got a very high chance for tornadoes and seriously damaging winds.

So you guys know, I literally live in between Chicago and Rockford, IL, which are both named in the above video. =|

Hey, you take care of yourself tonight. I expect to see a rant here within soon again, so don't go letting us down.

Make sure your computer stays secure in case of flood. And yourself.

    Aww tetrisGOAT. <3

And yeah, I'll likely turn the computer off during the storm if it gets really nasty. That battery backup from Cyberpower though has been excellent so far! However I still like staying on the safe side.

Thankfully, after the one time the basement flooded just a little bit (did I ever talk about that great event?) we got some coverings for the fire escape windows so water doesn't just come pouring in.

It amazes me, we've lived in this house now for 27 years almost and about 22 years into living here was the first time the basement ever had any flooding. Impressive.

Stay safe man. I remember when it was flooding in Houston and I messaged Reeves to make sure he was okay. When I was younger my house was hit by two hurricanes....those are not fun.

In other news mmo-champion announced that the 1070/1080 is available for order on Amazon, first time I remember mmo has ever even said their was new computer parts coming out.

Yep. Everything terrible stayed south. I actually napped a bit tonight and was woken by some thunder, nothing like what happened merely 10+ miles south of me. Tornadoes especially 50~ miles south. >_< If I wasn't working all day tomorrow, I'd probably drive down there to help out and take pictures. I really should do storm-chasing. I've always been OBSESSED with the weather.

Anyways... for @Xuvial, here ya go buddy. Damn New Zealanders.

With UK bailing on the EU I think I might go and spend a few weeks traveling around Western Europe for a while. I wasn't allowed to vote because I haven't lived there for too long. It would have been better for me personally to stay in: my passport was effectively an invitation to work in every western nation without a second thought and now that is likely to be more difficult. It's hard to be too upset though, the friends/family I still have there were at best 'divided' on the issue and the idea of rejecting an international governing body influencing your local laws does have a certain appeal to the "Lleave me alone" part of my personality. I shouldn't really have a say in legislation that has such a small impact on me relative to the (apparently) very large one on people who live in the UK, but it's a little bit of a sad outcome. Next up Trump messing up America I guess…

On the plus side, we'll finally be rid of that pig-fucker Cameron.

I just love how Amazon/Newegg will email me/suggest me products after I go hunting for people on here or real life friends. XD

"HEY, YOU SHOPPING FOR DUH BEST GRAPHICS CARDS?! WIFI ADAPTERS?! AWESOME HD MONITORS?!!!!"

    Guys.. really....

And yeah, Brexit. I just don't see it being beneficial in the long run. It's like a giant step backwards, but eh, idk if people really want to get into it here. =X

    So...

My baby $1,200 Samsung 34" monitor took a tumble yesterday on the way into the LAN party. Completely my fault. XD

I went to open my passenger side door of my car and forgot the monitor was literally leaning against it, so it tumbled out onto the asphalt/concrete. =| Fell probably 2~ feet.

Got some scratches and dents on the top as well as one of the top corners got mostly chewed off. YAY PLASTIC!

Thankfully, the price I paid for this monitor was some insurance - that I could be assured it would be alright. The monitor is still working perfectly fine, no visual errors on the screen! The panel along the back popped out a little bit in a few spots, but nothing tremendous, so I just pushed those spots back in here at home today. All is well, now the top is just a bit permanently damaged - a good reminder to pay attention and be careful!

Definitely not buying a new monitor. No noticeable difference sitting in front of it!
