Compare the two you plan to buy, not the one you currently have and the most expensive one you could buy.

    i7-2600K vs i7-3930K

It really all comes down to, do you have the disposable income? If you can splurge enough, then go ahead, but I'd only get the 3930K if after the other purchase, you've bought a modular quality power supply (i.e. Seasonic, Enermax, Silverstone, Corsair, Antec), a good quality SATA III SSD of at least 120GB~ (Crucial, Intel, Samsung, Mushkin, Kingston, Corsair), enough HDDs for the footage, see what I'm getting at?

I would say, only go for the 3930K if your budget is enough over $1,500 and you'll have money left over to keep you alive. :P This is no small investment, so I don't like seeing people waste money. :P Like so many people buy i7-26/700Ks, thinking they're OH SO MUCH BETTERER FOR GAMING, when really they are not meant to be better for gaming, more heavily-multithreaded tasks, and are better for gaming in maybe 2-3 games. Now if you have like $2,000, be my guest. :P Just make sure you pair a nice GPU (or two!) with it, a GOOD motherboard, the stuff I said above....

Basically, don't make the 3930K the shining diamond in the mud, get what I mean? :P Like you already said Asus X79 Pro, that's alright, and probably good enough, but don't cheap out on the GPU/SSD/PSU/RAM, these all matter.

And of course always make sure your peripherals are pleasing to you and make your gaming/computing experience the best possible.

ahhh lost myself in a rant there.

I currently Have ~1300 AUD to spend Which as you can see will all be used up by my current plan. IF I knew when Ivy would come out It would be a different story. Lack of information has pretty much forced me into this position.

and this is my Current plan
    http://www.computeralliance.com.au/p...?qryPart=13298 CPU: i73930k $630
    http://www.computeralliance.com.au/p...?qryPart=13302 MoBo: ASUS 2011 Pro $330
    http://www.computeralliance.com.au/p...?qryPart=13403 HDD: WD 1.5TB Black $150
    http://www.computeralliance.com.au/p...qryPart=13317: SSD: Cav. 120BG $190
USing a 212+ as cooling (they made a bracket for the 2011 socket <3)
    I would also be using a 6970, 850OCZ Gold and 8GB G Skill Ram @1600

Its not a gaming upgrade its a workstation upgrade.

I currently run BF3 at max and wow @ ultra in raids. I don't need it for gaming I need it so I actually can use my PC for gaming cause all it does atm is render leaving me no time for fun. (I don't like to let it run while I am out)
    CPU: i7 3930k@4.4 Mobo: Rampage IV X79 RAM: 32GB Ripjaw @ 1600Mhz GPU: EVGA 780ti SC SSD: 128GB M4

Well since you already have so many perfectly good parts, then I'll totally back off.

However I can't see what SSD you have picked out, the page isn't showing the item.

Oh and yeah, Drunken, we're in April, so later this month is when the Desktop processors should drop. (i.e. the important ones being the i5-3570K and i7-3770K).

Damn. I am not the most informed on the topic and how fast all this works but do you guys think there will be Ivy Bridge notebooks (and ultrabooks) available in August or September? I was kinda planning on buying one and if I don't have it by the 3rd week of Sept I kinda dunno how I'd start school...

Ivy Bridge CPUs are expected to have a cost almost identical to their Sandy Bridge predecessors.

Mobile IB CPUs should be out at the latest sometime in the summer.

I hope so. It makes sense to me though, otherwise they would be against themselves...

More confirmation that Z77 motherboards will be releasing April 8... http://www.fudzilla.com/home/item/26...hing-april-8th

So, 21 days difference between the motherboard and the CPU, is that normal?

  13. #33
I guess they were probably aiming for an 8th April processor release but that got pushed back, while the things delaying the actual processor didn't impact the motherboard production.

I am seriously contemplating getting a Z77 board (the same Extreme 4 that you are getting) and grabbing a 2500k on the 8th. If my money comes through by then that is. Convince me not to

  14. #34
Will a 2500K work in a Z77 board? I was under the impression that it was an Ivy Bridge only chipset.

  15. #35
I remember reading somewhere that it would.

    edit:

Z77 is of course the Intel chipset for the upcoming Ivy bridge based processors. These motherboards will have a slightly altered feature set and thus support them new upcoming apples from Intel. Good to know however is that Z77 also supports Sandy Bridge Socket 1155 based processors, that's right your favorite Core i5 2500K and Core i7 2600K will be perfect for these motherboards as well. The changes for Z77 primarily can be found in native USB 3.0 support as well as an upgrade towards PCie gen 3 PCIe x16 slots.

Yeah, should work nicely with a H100

And I wonder why you are using ASrock mainboards? They are like the cheap version of asus boards.

Ivy Bridge laptops as early as next week? Here's to hoping it means we'll see desktop CPUs on the 8th afterall.

But probably not, there's an Ivy Bridge announcement scheduled for the 23: http://www.cpu-world.com/news_2012/2...on_May_15.html
