I guess I just love the western "atmosphere" more than a particular point in history. Fallout New Vegas felt "western" to me even though it was set in a post apocalyptic setting. I guess the main condition would be a huge sandbox style world and I'm not sure anyone would be willing to do it.

Fallen Earth is kind of like that. It's set after the apocalypse but it has a very 'western' vibe to it, the landscape, the settlements, the clothes.

I would love a Western-themed MMO, especially something sandbox-y. I'd be content herding cattle and trying to protect them from those that would do them and me harm. There doesn't even have to be factions. Build your own towns, trading posts, or be a renegade and take what you want.

edit: My underlying love of westerns was rekindled about a year ago when I started watching Hell on Wheels on AMC.

Dont like traditional fantasy MMOs anymore (as in evil dragons...)? - Try "the secret world"...

While I do really love The Secret World*, let's stay on the topic of what we'd like to see in a hypothetical Western MMO. TSW has its own Megathread.

*I mean, I really love it.

Would love crafting where "herding" is actually a viable option. Herding the cattle across the plains. Protecting them from both beasts and men. Getting them to the stockyards and getting paid for it. Yeah, would need to a really big sandbox.
