Lmao and you'd think with a such a Incredibly large cooler It would actually cool everything. Epic fail.

    Anyone that:

    A. Is an overclocker
    B. Isn't an ignorant this brand or that brand fanboy

    Gets a 7970.

This may change whenever Nvidia decides to push the 685 to production, but for the time being, AMD is leading the pack aside from reference cards. And really, no one's buying them anymore.

The 7970 was sold out for about 3 weeks actually, certain models are still sold out on the Newegg Canada site, like the MSI Lightning model. The prices are landsliding down super fast though, most of the models are now sub-500 on the Canadian Newegg site. With the prices dropping now though, they are going to sell, especially as they get below the GTX 680 price point. When the 7970 with custom coolers gets closer to the 425-450 mark, Nvidia is going to get pushed into an awkward situation.

That's why they have the 685 up their sleeve. IMO it was an idiotic move to flagship a card that wasn't intended to be one.

    Quite the contrary imo.
If you can take what should be a ~300$ card and sell it for ~500$, while still beating, or equaling(?) the competition performance wise, you are definetly doing a smart business move.
Not saying it's the morally correct one, or the best for the consumers, but from their profits point of view, i'd say it is.

Alright, let's get back to the topic shall we? Just to clarify, this is not a thread for discussing/comparing the two new "flagship" GPUs from nVidia and AMD.

    Thanks.

The HIS 7970 is now down to $449 on NewEgg.

IMO it was an idiotic move to not have at least the 660 ready to go at the same time as the 680 launch, especially with AMD being 4 months ahead of them. While nVidia is getting some enthusiast sales, AMD is raking in the cash from the mainstream market and the OEM sales with the 7750-7870s.

So in a thread dedicated to the 79xx series, we can't discuss the 7970? What?!

In addition, in a thread dedicated to AMD's high end price drops, we can't draw comparisons and reasons why against the only logical reason, Nvidia?

I'm sorry, your statement just makes little sense. There's no reason to moderate anyone discussing the above mentioned things.

These price drops are really making me consider passing on the 680 since it's impossible to find and it's more money.

Having the same problem....just starring at Newegg right now considering hitting the checkout button. I've just had bad experiences with their cards in the past so I was waiting for a gtx680. I think if I can find some dumbed down explanation between the two cards and there performance, I may just get the 7970 if they are pretty close to each other at stock.

The GTX 680 is going to be faster stock vs. stock in the majority of gameplay. The HD 7970 quickly makes up the differerence when both are overclocked >1100MHz and will be faster in very high-res setups. Since the HD 7970 is now notably cheaper I would say don't hesitate to buy an HD 7970.

There close enough that you probably wouldn't notice the difference if you had 2 of the same computers with both cards sitting side by side.

With cards now at sub $500 it's temping to set up xfire... But it would also mean adding anther component to my liquid loop... So freakin tempting.

Why does the MSI Lightning have two 8pin power connectors and the sapphire dual X or whatever has one 8 pin and one 6 pin?

    6-pin PEG = 75W
    8-pin PEG = 150W
    PCIe slot = 75W

The MSI HD 7970 Lightning Edition therefore is capable of drawing 375W while the Sapphire is a 300W card. Technically the PCIe specification does not allow for more than 300W, but nobody really cares anymore. It's also not unheard of to exceed the rated wattages of each of those power sources. You just run a higher risk of too many amps going down thin gauge wires...

So tempted to go with the ASUS DirectCU II 7970
I can get one for 450€, which is the same/lower price than a 680, it's in stock too :P

Is the price reduction and the three free games a limited time offer, or is the price reduction permanent?

Not exactly the same, but a comparison between Twin Frozr II vs DirectCU II (2 slot model) on a GTX 560 Ti here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qt7_mHgwr98

The MSI was not only cooler, but also emitted a more pleasing, smoother noise signature.
