I seem to remember ANet saying that they didnt want people to get annoyed at seeing other people in the world. Think of WoW, when is it a good thing to see another player?

    Herbing/mining - steal nodes
    Questing - steal mobs/items
    PvP - other faction ganker.

GW2 has none of this. And I freaking love it.

I'll probably spend the stress test leveling more to experience more areas (maybe get a better feel for the Norn and Charr areas) or else run off to Godslost Swamp... and let come what may.
I'm still waiting on a motherboard, powersupply, ssd and case......so yh, def BWE2 for me at the earliest.
I'll be on the guild chat channel though to link up if ppl fancy it. I doubt I'll get close to a dungeon in BWE2, I tend to level slow......and get sidetracked v v easily by such things as gathering and crafting.

@Glytch-yes, we can still be friends

Actually i didnt experience it that people would take quest-item nodes, making them unavailable to the rest. Infact the opposite, i saw someone pick up a pike of Cogs and i could pick up the same pile. I would wash away graffiti on a wall, and someone would come right behind me and wash that same wall again.

I *think* the higher the event scales, the shorter the spawn times are, but each is worth less completion % wise.

Yeah, dealing damage seem to be counted for a lot, compared to supporting or ressing. Although, I once got Gold participation in escorting a Dovyak (WvWvW) just by giving it one speed boost.

It's probably just me, but with me it goes:
Herbing/Mining: just find a different node
    Questing: ask to group up
    PvP: Mind Control and buff.

No, I saw the exact same thing as he did. I'm almost positive I was picking up the same items others were, which means even the quest pickups are instanced to a degree. There's a definite possibility that this isn't true with all events though.

To clarify; I greatly dislike typical MMO PVP. In that I don't consider most forms of implementation in the MMO genre even PVP.

Enjoy PVP quite a bit in genres I feel better suited to such design; RTS, MOBAs, FPS, Racing games, etc. MMOs, ARPGs, RPGs, etc; not well designed environments for PVP, typically.

A lot of the time, I just got the feeling that participation isn't scaled/measured right for every event just yet. Many of my gold medals were acquired by following a zerg with my Shortbow and spamming Cluster Bomb, which I consider to be very little involvement. Whereas all the bronze and silver medals I got were where I was actually working hard to contribute to the event.

Yah. Jerom's remark doesnt sound entirely strange. I cant recall which event exactly, but i remember figuratively scratching myself behind the ear and thinking "odd, this quest item wasnt phased".

No, I'd do that too. Just a nuisance to get the other person to understand what you're doing. Silly people!

There's a reason I mentioned a very specific questing area. People were taking my apples. D:

My only difference is that I do LFD/R, but I expect nothing out of it -- thus I'm never disappointed when someone starts Spine and loot rolls haven't even finished, or new players haven't zoned in yet.

I used to be that very helpful player who'd go around helping people, or trying to give instruction to other players in dungeons... but the negative responses I got were never worth it. If asked I help, sure I'd be a dick not to, but I never offer help anymore. It's just not worth it.

Reading through things, I do see quite a bit of hate for the ugly parts of the MMO community that shine through in WoW's LFD/LFR, but remember, ANet has said that they consider an LFD tool of some sort to be an essential part of a modern MMO, and though we don't really know what sort of form it will take... for all the love I have of GW2, I know for a fact, that the same people we all love to hate in WoW and other MMOs will still show up in a random-queue system of some sort. There's really no way around it, sadly.

Hence, just like what Fencers said: I'll either go solo or with the guild! While soloing, I can really feel the random acts of a good community, or at least I did in the last BWE, with people rezzing others all over, and I would go out of my way to help people fight off mobs and rez others myself.

There is nothing inherently wrong with LFD/LFR tool, just the way it was implemented, not long ago there was a nice post in the WoW section about how it would have been good tool rather than mindless que. In addition GW2 doesn't suffer from the design decisions that made WoW's LFD so bad. For example there would be less elitism and pig headedness since everybody is replaceable. Person is a jerk? kick him and put on ignore, not like he would have instant que (if he is tank/healer) thus more incentive to be a group player. Hell if the tool could be set by the user to search parties from your realm only thus bring the people together on your server, even cross realm is not as bad since you can freely go visit that other realm that you met people on. Another thing that comes to mind if dungeon runs would be perceived as challenging tasks to begin with wiping would be a more tolerated outcome again encouraging better group dynamics and communication. Of course I am only looking at the full part of the glass and it can go horribly wrong, but one can hope, right?

Part of the problem with LFD/LFR tool is the disparity between tank/heal/DPS. Don't forget that!

I agree, been saying something along those lines myself in another thread:

Basically I don't mind anything that the game can do to make finding groups of people easier, as long as the people I get grouped with actually want to do the dungeon. In "other games" you get grouped with people that don't want to do the dungeon - they want it over with as soon as possible to cap their currency grind.

This is what I'm looking forward to in GW2 - the (hopeful) return of "casual-cooperation". I don't want to make any bestest-buddies-forever, I just want to play alongside like-minded people, whether that means helping out in a DE, or running through an explorable-mode dungeon, or anything.... without feeling like everything is a chore for those involved and that we are all competing with each other and looking for any excuse to cause drama.

I was playing The Secret World over the weekend and couldn't remember if I was supposed to help someone or just walk by...it's not that I don't want to help, but I don't wanna ruin someones fight by jumping in unwanted...GW2 has ruined me.

Helping people in the world - yeah, I'll try and help...I play/have played a lot of healer types, so it's easier to just throw in a heal or whatever. I have had people then shriek at me for not healing them again when they thought they needed it - even though I was quite a way away...

PUGS...it was after playing several particularly gruesome PUGS that I decided to retire from healing in them - not all were horrible, but it was happening too frequently. I'm generally very patient - so if everyone is polite etc, but it's just not happening, then I'll try all night...but the second some arsehole opens their mouth, I'm gone.

I've tried it out in the stress test, yep. You are right and my suspicions were correct:

    1) Heart events are not shared with other players unless you are grouped. I can easily see why - the reward is personal (gold in the mail + vendor is now available) the reward does not scale since you just need to complete the event. Obviously because of this reason the event is not share since otherwise it would be way to easy to complete without actually having to do anything. However that situation creates the problem that other players while trying to complete their objective prevent/make it hard for you to complete yours - the only exception is if you need to kill somebody then if you actually manage to land a hit the kill is counted for both of you everything else is run quickly and hope you clicked that interaction button before the other guy. Obviously not all events have shortage of intractable objects but there is quite a few that have limited amount of bushes/trees/holes that you can interact with.

    2) Dynamic Gathering events: collecting apples, tools, shard or anything else for that matter. The items are not instanced (I've run two different accounts from two machines in same event, grouped and ungrouped to verify) and you are competing to get the biggest amount to get the best possible reward - gold medal. Of course it's counter productive but I feel that it could be remedied if you'd get a gold medal even if the other participants "hogged" everything, on the other hand it opens up opportunity for people to piggyback off your work. Example there are 3 people in the event you need to gather 30 items if you get gold medal after giving in 5, it would create a situation where a person get his ways and just let other fill the rest for him which indirectly hinders them.

I'd love to see how Anet tackles those issues, however after giving it much thought I am not sure that it is even possible. Oh well, at least we still can share kills.

I actually helped several people today, I would see these guys fighting mobs that were a bit high level (i.e. 1-2 lvls higher than them) and help them out, it was really fun. In all my years of WoW I NEVER felt compelled to actually assist anyone kill a mob that I didn't have tagging rights on, and in this game you aren't even necessarily actually rewarded for helping (because there's still a chance that the mob won't drop you a loot and the experience gain is nominal at best...but exp also isn't an important thing). Felt pretty good to not be motivated by avarice for once.
