If you mean that he comes back at the end in FFX-2, it still means he "died" in FFX.
If you mean that he isn't dead cause he technically wasn't human, he was like a spirit or a dream.... then I'd reply that he was being erased from existence at the end of FFX which is dying in my mind.

From my understanding, he was never born to begin with. The Zanarkin that he lived in, and the one that the players saw in the beginning was not the real Zanarkin of the past. It was a Zanarkin alternate world being held together by the dreams of the Aions.

You really got a feel for Batman and Joker's crazy relationship. And you could tell the Joker loved antagonizing the Bat, and maybe even loved getting captured by him, because it meant the game could go on. And after everything that happened, it made the credits even sadder.

I won't spoil anything, but there's an awesome scene in Batman Arkham Asylum involving Scarecrow and the Joker... freaked me right the fuck out. Easily one of the best "death" moments in gaming.
