It was very personal so it's pointless here. It depends on if you have your own mats for your own crafted items. It might differ if one is only a market player.
I used to make all of my gold from herbalism and alchemy. While the gold is decent, it was more worthwhile for me to level up enchanting / jewelcrafting and do the shuffle.
I have 7 xmuters but never sold my transmutes. When i saw people spamming for an xmute i would ask and they would only want to pay 100-150 which doesn't make it worth it. Air generally floated around 20g each on my server up until recently. I could sell a transmute for 150 or transmute life to air and make a minimum 280. I never understood why sell a transmute for less than 200g. With 7 xmuters i was making around 2000-2500g per day just selling air.
It became broken once enough guilds make their own cauldrons and got the chugalug perk.
The chugalug perk is being scrapped so it will be a great moneymaker once again in MOP.
Alchemy is also very dependent on raiders. LFR was raiding easymode that didnt require raiding and less players went on to raid proper, it also had a weakening effect on players doing DS on heroic becayse who wnats to do the same content 3 times?
Hook ip in guild with another two alchemists so you have each of the specialisms. Xmute was the most profitable one during cata.
I still make reasonable money from poys and strangely enough flasks, but it is a fraction of what you could make in other expansions.
Alchemy is more long game profit. 200+ gold every day x the number of alchys youu have...
Versus ore shuffle which I might do once every week
