I'd be happy to play with them, but I can't log in until I pick new names, and that has proven to be an exercise in futility. I spent 3 hours trying to come up with names last night. Eventually logged off in disgust. How could everything be taken?

The thing that gets me is I bet at least one of them is a level 1 that's never been played on an account that hasn't been active for months. I'm tempted to roll a new character on another server just so I can bug a GM about it.

You could always do one of those accented characters to get your name...lame I know but its something.

I should had worded that better. Due to a certain patching malfunction I had to re-download the full game, and I had only finished doing that yesterday. So, even though I transfered my agent from Veela to Prophecy of the Five last week, I was only able to log in and see the difference last night. That's what I meant when I said "See the difference between a dead server and a live one" And OHH BOY was the difference big or what?

Up to 1000 people on fleet, one would have to see it to believe it.

As for Canderous (my other server where my marauder is) before the transfers, it wasn't "dead" per se, but it was pretty bad, now its also packing full of people.

Interestingly enough I've not been subbed for some time. I may consider it in the future but that's not the reason for this post. I was concerned that if and when I return to the game what will happen to my character on my lonesome server. I didn't want to just sub to move my toon since I'm not prepared to return at this time.

Anyways I'll get to the point I logged into my account and checked that indeed it was "inactive" and looked at the conditions for transferring characters and seen that yes you have to have an active subscription to transfer your character(s). I figured no harm done and went through the motions of doing the transfer and everything proceeded with the "next"...."next"....."next" icons and sure enough 1 minute later I got two e-mails regarding my transfer and one saying it was complete.

To summarize if your account is not active you can still go and transfer your characters now just in case you do return and the server or character has been archived, deleted or w/e.

Here's a screenshot of the proof that it did in fact work with a dormant subscription:

I figured this is a worth while tidbit of information to pass on for people who may return in the future.

    That's interesting for sure.

Wonder why they would specifically say you need an active account then not even follow their own restrictions? Man, Bioware is so scatterbrained.

Me thinks, they probably meant that when this service goes paid, you will need an active account to move your stuff.

Transferred on Monday, painless, no problems with all my characters. Smooth as silk, have to hand it to Bioware on this front, the wait was worth it, not only for transfers but the server population of the destination server is huge. 300 people on fleet at peak time is insane, with loads of others all over the place on planets etc.

I can pvp more or less at any time on my 50. Its amazing. Never been better than to play SWTOR from now onwards in my opinion.

Yea, I did this on the first day with my unsubbed account aswell (The ravager->Tomb of...). Worked and I went on my merrily way.

Can it be that what they mean with "active" is really just active as in "not banned"?

Also what has been making me squeal like a little girl lately is active world pvp! Its funny but I probably had maybe 10-12 at most world pvp encounters lvling up on my old server now the zones are crawling with pubs and they are aggressive lol It's taken some getting used to but I love it. That has always been one of my most favorite aspects of MMO's and that is that feeling of uncertainty when doing dalies or lvling a alt that death might just be waiting right around the corner. Its been a ton of fun.

Yea it's sort of funny though (I play on a PvE server) and some of my guildies have gotten in the habit of not paying attention if they are flagged or not and were complaining about getting ganked during their dailies the other day. I am a horrible person, but I laughed and was like "well don't bee flagged". But it is good to see it happening out in the world again. I hope the redesigns for Ilum PvP will be in 1.4, with all these new people around I would love to see real world pvp.

Yea I wasn't happy waiting for transfers but now that it has happened for me I couldn't be happier and I am also really looking forward to 1.3 now.

I can now actually get groups in black hole. On my old server I was lucky if there was even one other person in black hole. Yesterday I was able to do Chasing the Shadow for the first time and was able to get some Black hole commendations from the weekly. It was amazing.

The fleet almost always has 2 instances.

The only cruddy thing is that prices in the AH still suck. The few things that I want are overpriced and anything I can possibly sell sells for garbage. Almost nothing sells for over 50k despite everyone always saying how easy money is to get in this game. You would think people could afford to pay more but every time I put a big stack or a rare item in the AH someone undercuts me by a lot (not just a bit to get the sale but for like half what I posted) and destroys any hope of me making a profit. So the AH is the only thing that hasn't lived up to my expectations since the transfer.

Are there any servers still "waiting"?

The Hawk could use a few more just to balance us out

Anyone else having an issue where it says you've got one more character on your destination server than you actually do? I had 8 characters on my origin server, and now I can't transfer the last one cause it thinks I've got 8 characters on the destination server. Is this just a placeholder deal and I just need to wait for it, or what?

Create a character at your destination server, then delete it . This should fix your problem.

I had this when one of my 8 characters didn't arrive at the destination server. when logging into the game it showed 7 characters but the transfer system considered the destination server full. After creating a new character ingame and then deleting it I could transfer the last character.

Took me 3 days and well over 100 name combinations to find something that wasn't taken on the new server. What a nightmare...

Now bring on 1.3 so I can finally put this behind me.

This whole character transfer thing re-iterates a major thing that people were complaining about in the first place: names. Single names for each character is such an out-of-date notion for an MMO. It's going to lead to all sorts of grief when the game is new, for new players who join, and for any time you do a server merge.

Can you imagine how hard it would be to find ANY name that wasn't almost completely random in D3 if we weren't identified by a single handle?

MMO developers need to enforce uniqueness by either character first and last name, by a special handle you can use for each character that would not be the one normally used/displayed in-game, or by a specific handle for the account. That way if you want your guy to be called "Shadow", then you can be one of 1,000 "Shadows" running around, and yet you can all be unique and everyone is happier. The design decision to have a single name for character is just another sign of how this game was made to standards of around 2007.
