You'd want to stay away from machines as much as possible unless you have a specific reason to use one.
While there is a smaller chance of getting a immediate injury using machines, there is a much bigger chance of getting a lasting injury while using machines. This is known as repetitive stress injury and is in this case caused by the locked movement in machines. Your body is made to move freely, there is nothing natural about the movement of machines, the muscle stabilizers, especially in shoulders are very fragile and needs frequent free movement training. Compound movements are especially important to train in free weight as it targets lots of the smaller stabilizing muscles that compound machines do not train. Your muscles are made to work together with each other, not being isolated.
Do yourself a favor and train free weight. Cable rows and Lat pulldowns are not 'machines' unless they force you into a fixed movement. Those who just lets you pull a cable is considered free weight.
