this is just big BS. even before 1996, the internet was there. the roots of internet lay in the ARPAnet, which was a US military decentralization attempt in the 1960's. in the late 1980's, CERN developed the roots for the current internet (HTTP, HTML, browsers, web servers). and the World Wide Web project started in 1991.

not true. Netscape Navigator (which I first used on my Windows 95 PC) was a web browser, that according to Wikipedia - released in '94. The "Internet" existed in the mid 80s, but for Military purposes (or earlier?) and didn't go public until the early 90s. I'll try to find a concrete answer.

EDIT: And Nzall knows more than I do... perhaps I should have refreshed my page.

Yeah, that's not even close to accurate. Here's a snapshot of a USENET group from '81

    https://groups.google.com/forum/?fro...U/lPyVdYqCXyAJ

Something that might be of interest, the WayBack Machine

    http://archive.org/web/web.php

That will show you websites back to 1996 at the earliest, when the internet archive started up, and is rather neat to look at.

Here was my university's website in September '96 http://web.archive.org/web/199612281...www.valpo.edu/

If people were to delay posting long enough to double-check their facts on wikipedia or another wiki, we wouldn't have such big misunderstandings.

the basis of the internet was laid 50 years ago, the first things that came near to current internet (which were usenet groups, basically forums) was created 30 years ago.

I've never quite understood this relation between Al Gore and the Internet... He was simply a Congressman who pushed funds towards the project...

The term "Inter-Net" was a French invention, later adopted, adapted and improved to create the internet of today.

    http://vimeo.com/lonja/history-of-the-internet

USA, UK and France each had their own version, the French one was the origin of the system we use today.

So if you're wondering what the oldest post on the INTERNET is, then it'll probably be written in French.

Usenet would be the oldest forums.

It's because Al Gore claimed to invent the internet, it's a joke.

Yeah no shit the internet actually existed before 1996 but thats when it officially released to the public.

Prior to that it wasn't really the "internet" but essentially just LANs for universities and the military.

Anybody could access it as long as you had a modem and permission to connect to one of the LAN's. November of 1992 Delphi officially became the first ISP selling internet connections to anybody in the public. 1995 was when the NSF stopped enforcing the ban against commercialization on the internet (allowing people to sell things on the internet)

As far as I know, nothing happened in 1996, and the internet was definitely available to the public before then.

Whats wrong with wanting to know about the web from a long time ago. Before most of the stuff we are used to existed. Like meme's 4chan youtube etc.
The internet was much better in the 1995+ era because you needed to be somewhat of a geek to get on it so everyone had above a certain level of intelligence.

There were no advanced forums like this one, there were very primitive ones but the main way people discussed various subjects was via newsgroups where the level of discourse was exquisite and all unmoderated too.

Once it became too easy to get on the internet, standards dropped rapidly, newsgroups started to fill with spam.

Forums have evolved into what they are and moderation is more of a necessity.

That's pretty incredible when you think about it. I can remember a time where I would play AoE and the internet didn't exist... scary thought.

How is more than ten years ago a long time ago?

I've been online since like, uh, well, 1994? I think. Unless you count BBS email forwarders as being online, in that case I was online a little bit earlier.

Earliest memory of using the internet was at my friends house and they opened up netscape and we were all like "uh...ok so now what?". I think his parents had like some random search engine they used. I remember being unimpressed because I didn't understand it.

Later on I found out about internet porn. Life changer.

Been an internet user since the 1990s. Had experience with it before it was a regular household item due to school field trips to universities and what not focused around the emerging technology (back in elementary school).

I don't get where this 1996 number is coming from though. There were plenty of very broad public networks going on before 1996.

I literally had school assignments in elementary school focused on doing research via Gopher. I had friends that BBSed, (I never did personally, my family didn't get a computer with a modem until after the World Wide Web arose).

And then I read on a quote somewhere that somebody said the "modern internet" is where internet memes were invented? In high school I had a wooden ruler that I inscribed with the words "KTHKX STICK".

Because "KTHX BAI" actually dates back to 1997, but BYE was actually spelled correctly.

Bonus points if you can describe the full original meme from which "kthx" originates, and why I might have written "KTHKX STICK" on a wooden ruler in highschool.

EDIT: I mean honestly, I was fully versed in writing HTML (table based page layouts included) before 1996. So how was I able to make web pages before the internet was supposedly released to the public?

The first family computer my family had in the house, had a 28.8Kbaud modem, and that was lightning-fast state of the art stuff at the time. My friend with the 14.4 modem was so jelly!
