The (b&w) Night of the Living Dead. A movie with no music and has great atmosphere and does surprise me even now...

I simply can't understand how or why anyone thinks that the Paranormal Activity movies are scary... The only thing scary is how bad the acting is.

The sequel mainly consists of clips of the pool and the poolcleaner - it's hilarious.

GHOST IN THE HOUSE? LETS NEVER LEAVE!

    DO WE HAVE JOBS? NOPE!

EVIL PRESENCE? LETS BUY A FUCKING OUIJA BOARD!

Seriously the movie was dumb, low rent, TERRIBLY acted, and made 0 sense. It had as much atmosphere and detail as a wet dishrag.

So lets get to some movies that haven't been brought up:

Session 9 - Harder to take seriously nowadays since Caruso is a meme, but very well made and good storytelling.

Rosemary's Baby - Honestly shocked this hasn't been brought up, probably because it has a more emotional impact on women (or because it's a Polanski film)

Hellraiser - Intense effects, bizzare plot, great camerawork

Nightmare On Elm Street - Nearly suffers like Session 9 due to the Depp presence, but goddamn if it isn't a (or debatably THE) pinnacle of horror effects.

From Beyond - Another Lovecraft adaptation from Stuart Gordon (Re-Animator), recently got a DVD treatment after only being on laserdisc for years.

In The Mouth Of Madness - Sam Neil! SAM NEIL! Also, a Lovecraft adaptation as well.

The Devil's Backbone - Friggin amazingly atmospheric horror film from Guillermo Del Toro (Pan's Labrynth, Hellboy). Spanish, but super awesome.

With A Friend Like Harry - French film that is a perfect culmination of every Fatal Attraction ripoff ever made.

Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer - Stark, disturbing film about the exploits of a serial killer (AKA Exactly what it says on the tin).

Deliverance - The 'butt' (pun intended) of many rape jokes, this movie has tension thick enough to spread on toast.

The Thing - Okay I lied. Nightmare On Elm Street has 99/100 effects, but The Thing (1982 natch) has 100/100. Perfect effect work. I would even go so far as to say that no film ever made stands up with the longevity of The Thing. Even the goddamn film used to shoot the movie was so far beyond it's eras standards.
Saw this at the Roskilde Festival in '07 - I was blown away, it was just amazing! Not just creepy and spooky, but all-in-all just a fantastic movie.

Amazing sig, done by mighty Lokann

Land of the Dead. Gorey beyond anything I've seen before or after it. I wished that I could find all copies of it and dump them into a black hole, so they'd get crushed into non-existence!!

It's just because we all like different things. I'm sure there are movies you like that I'm not too fond of.

It's not very polite to ridicule other people's taste in movies, though.

I'll add Signs to my list. It had a couple of scenes that made me jump, and the atomsphere was tense.

The Haunting is an incredibly underrated movie. Such a great ghost story!
I didn't list it because it's not as disturbing as some others, and actually more enjoyable than frightening. But still, a great movie! One of my favourite 'horror's.

I hope the creators of that movie get cancer in their eyes and die a slow and painful death. Fucking horrible people.
It's fake; although that's funny that you pick the cat scene out of the whole movie.

I don't find gore or torture porn scary. I'm more impressed by supernatural horror. That being said there are no scary movies imo. The horror genre is like Afganistan, bombed out and depleted.

I'd say it's more like the Taliban; Americans don't know where to find it and it's probably not in the country they're looking for it in.

Almost all of the best horror these days comes from smaller, East European companies, where making horror has not been turned into a box-office number crunching event. Also Korea has been popping out quite a few good ones too.

Yeah, no one in America has netflix. None of that stuff is hard to find; it's just not good.

The Ring 1 and 2, by far. Very well done, IMO. The premise for Paranormal Activity was good, and some of the scenes were indeed creepy, but the insane stupidity of the main characters made me start cheering for the ghost about halfway through the movie. The vast majority of horror movies have great potential but manage to fuck it up in the second half of the movie, for example Insideous, what a piece of shit that turned into. While a lot of the older movies are disturbing like IT or The Exorcist, IMHO they are dated movies just can't scare me, personally, as they aren't very convincing anymore. I like both The Thing and Alien but neither are really scary in the horror sense.

When I was a little kid it was Jaws. Deep water, plus that shark and the drums duh-dum duh-dum. Goosebumps.

So things like [REC] to Julia's Eyes to Let The Right One In to Serbian Film to Switchblade Romance to Kill List and so on are not good?

The Gift still freaks me out. Has all the kind of elements that freak me out (mysterious thriller, building up to a momentum with a series of signs and lots of vague and creepy shit). I have seen it many, many, manyyy times and I still get a heart attack during some of the scenes.
I'm particular afraid of the general atmosphere of the movie though - countryside / farmer-ish lifestyle + psychics + ghost/spirits + violins + that type of nature.
    <.<

Also, all Ivo Caprino movies.. Not meant to be freaky, but I cry everytime I hear a song/voice/see a cover for those movies. These are some Norwegian children movies, made by some freaky dolls. A childhood fear of mine.

Horror movies have never been able to scare me. It has to be mysterious thrillers. Many have done a decent job at it (examples: mothman prophecies, insomnia, the others, signs)

Also good shark movies did the job when I was younger. Deep Blue Sea can still freak me out a bit, but Jaws movies are outdated :<

You may want to check out Open Water. It's not the best of films, but it's a cross between Jaws and the modern Blair Witch hand-cam style features of more recent times. It's pretty effective if you're afraid of the ocean depths and what lurks beneath.
