People love fireworks because it's like a Michael Bay movie only without anyone/anything being harmed.

I love Fireworks! I think they are pretty, fun to watch and interesting to see the different color combos and types. I have been to the 4th of July fireworks almost every year of my life so far with my parents and now my husband comes with us as well. We always grill out, spend time together and then go see them.

I daresay you could be just as thrilled by looking into a kaleidoscope.

Baffles me as well OP. I get their usage as part of a major event (I do not count the passing of a New Year one, by the way) to add to it. Actual firework displays themselves for the purposes of fireworks themselves. It gets old pretty quickly.

I like explosions, I like the smell of sulphur in the air, I like the bright colours and loud noise. I like the smoke!

    Fun fun fun!

Everybody loves things that go BOOM, and it just so happens that these things not only go boom but explode in a large array of colours at the SAME TIME!

I can understand that people like them, but I think they're far too expensive.

I honestly don't know. I love watching fireworks but I could not make an intelligent argument as to why.

I do, however, suspect that the explosions are filled with pro-American propaganda. Because who loves fireworks more than anyone else? That's right. Flag-waving Americans.

Buy like 500 sparklers for 10 dollars. Wrap about 30 of them together with electrical tape, with one sparkler sticking out above the rest. Light that one. Run like hell.

You're welcome. Unless you just burnt down your yard (very likely), then I'm sorry.

WARNING: In case somebody actually tries this, I feel obligated to warn you that these "sparkler bombs", as I call them, tend to get airborne. Do not point them toward anything you love, because it will die in multi-colored hellfire if you do.

Why are these fun? They're colors in the sky. And it's not like they change from year to year... nor is it like the finale makes 30 minutes of boredom worth it since it's just the same thing only a little faster.

For the life of me I don't understand why people love these things so much. My town spent $50,000 on our fireworks display this year. $50,000 could have been used to avoid a bond measure to pay for water infrastructure maintenance that we passed 2 weeks ago.

I realize even a fireworks display is more entertaining than water infrastructure maintenance... but COME ON. They are literally just lights in the sky. In what universe do people have more fun watching non-destructive aerial color bursts than doing ANYTHING else?

Seems like utter nonsense to me.
and i don't understand why you are posting this.

not everyting you like/dislike means everyone in the world like/dislikes it just like you.

if you don't like it don't go to it. simple as that. let other people who enjoy it enjoy it.

some people may ask why you waste your life on a video game. and how you can even come close to enjoying it.

OP This is what a decent fireworks show is like (Sydney NYE 2011/12)

How can you not love them?

Maybe just the capping off of the celebration of an event with a few resounding BOOMS and pretty lights. Why do we put up christmas trees. We're just cutting down trees or purchasing a $100 worth a plastic with a bunch of gaudy decorations on it. I suppose we could just set some unwrapped boxes in the corner until morning and then have everyone start playing with their new loot. Just tradition for the holiday. I'm not overly excited by them but if I can get out and hang with my family and maybe run into some people I know while watching some stuff in the sky why not? Besides, its super exciting for kids judging by their reactions.

It isn't a case of hating them, it is just finding them dull.

I don't get it myself. I absolutely cannot stand the noise from them - my parents took me to a fireworks display on November 5th when I was very small, and the racket had me in hysterics. I've hated them ever since.
The Dutch go absolutely mental for fire works at New Years. They are literally being set off all day and all night - then at midnight, it's just insane. People will spend hundreds (even thousands) of Euros on them and nearly EVERYONE in the city is setting them off. That's the reason I try to spend New Year in England with my family. Get some fireworks going off at midnight but it calms down pretty quickly.

If they were just pretty lights and such I'd be able to enjoy them more.

not bad altho there was only like 2-4 patterns all over again, but honestly its just huge waste of money imo

all fireworks are crap since i saw the fire show Gandalf did in LOTR, i know its just a movie, but i will like fireworks again when it will look like that...until that almost nothing can change my opinion that its just waste of money for some smelly sparks in the air

Noise, crowd, excitement, lights, patterns, colours. It all brings an atmosphere that is only really around firework displays.

There's no such thing as waste if it's under the entertainment category of society. If we were only to live by what is a logical thing to spend money on, we would only ever have education and science.

I kinda agree. Whilst they look cool, the whole "because they're explosions" is lost on me.

Don't get me wrong, I do have an inner pyromaniac, but seeing a firework display is like watching your mate play a game. I prefer to be one of the people making things go bang rather than watching it from half a mile away.

  19. #59
Because they are pretty light in the sky's aswell as social interaction with other people you are watching with?

Fireworks are only fun when you light them, otherwise I don't really care for them at all. Just my opinion though.

Oh and I wouldn't go anywhere near a public show with other people, that's not what I would call a enjoyable experience. Gathering up with a couple of friends on new years eve on the other hand is a different matter.
