We know nothing of the OP nor his family.
His family likely knows him.

Yet we're all quick to judge his family.
Maybe they heard him rap and he was terrible at it? Not just Vanilla Ice bad but full blown Rebecca Black bad.
Maybe they don't want to see him get hurt?

No one should be able to tell you what your passion is or is not. If you like it and you really want to try it then you should, regardless of what others think of it.

Your family sounds a bit like my own. They are a bit close minded and can't see things from a different point of view nor do they want to.

Just make sure you have something to fall back on if it doesn't work out the way you hoped (and according to your OP, you do have fall-back already), and that you try the waters before you jump in (write some songs, try some recording sessions etc) to see if you really have what it takes.
