Need advice on making a Tekkit server on a Mac

Before you say it
1: i dont care about the mac vs pc argument someone always feels a thread using the M word in the title must turn into
2: bootcamp isnt working right now so windows isnt an option.

That out of the way-

I've been running a vanilla minecraft server off my mac for me and a few uni mates and its been fine and good, but we have kind of reached the limits of what to do with plain survival vanilla and as such we've been thinking of restarting the server. However ive got the technic launcher and have really been enjoying my single player technic world and would love to do a smp tekkit server instead.

Now being a Mac user im not exactly experienced with hosting servers so ive got a few questions:
-What do i actually have to do to make it a tekkit server instead of a vanilla one?
-do all my friends need the technic mods installed to play or not?
-could i play it through the technic launcher rather than mod the vanilla launcher?
