[MoP] Protection Paladin Guide

Yeah, right now there is a a mountain you have to surpass and we're trying to climb everest wearing nothing but a pair of swim shorts and sandals. When technology advances and gear increases then it'll be a lot easier to get past that hurdle.

So what's going on with our DPS? I read on the front page that DKs and Prot Paladins do a ton of damage, but I wasn't seeing that in my raid. I looked at some logs, and it looks like Prot Paladins in 25 mans are doing very well, while Prot Paladins in 10 mans are not so much.

I looked at Feng, because it seemed pretty fair to both tanks.

Why the big difference? In my 10 man, our brewmaster tank does really well, especially on AoE/trash. He's often the top dps on those pulls, whereas I'm pretty much always well below DPS.

This isn't much on the factual side but just to provide some circumstantial evidence.

When I did Stone Guard on LFR I topped damage and came 5th on heals while I was MT.

Running the first 3 bosses in 10 man I consistently doubled the damage of our druid tank, and outdps'd atleast one of our dps on most attempts (altho gear might be an issue there).

Not sure if that helps but there it is.

In 25 man you get twice as much vengeance, and our damage and healing all scale off Attack Power, but have quite low base damage. Presumably Monks are the other way around.

Id have thought Feng would be a bad boss to compare tank dps on as one of the tanks spell steals the bosses abilities that do a ton of damage back onto the boss.

Cuz i saw on the guide and it said to get Haster > Parry > Dodge so probably the second one ??

Fixed links for you. Definitely the second one. Reason being that if you go for the haste build, after haste being the top stat, mastery is the second. If you go for the mastery build, haste is the second best stat, as long as you prioritize the one of the 2 you are aiming for on all your gear it won't make much difference.

Short answer - the second one.


I might be doing some updating, Corylyn linked me something saying there is a "final answer" and a set build rather than multiple ones now but I need to verify that it was the correct link and all that because the post hadn't been edited in over a week and the latest posts didn't give a definitive answer, so I need to do some more checking before I commit to a massive update which I can do at some point in the next 24 hours.

Dps:
Stone Dogs: 76k (tanking 2 dogs all the time)
Feng: 40k (seems a bit low - though i had the shield buff and wasnt on boss 100% of fight so /shrug)
Spirit guy: 47k (not sure about this one as this was logged by our warrior dps and im sure logs go funky when you're in different realms)
Spirit Kings: 51k (note that using AD and eating the annihilation hit means lol vengence buff xD )
Elegon: 103k (yay ranked #11)


interestingly healing:
Stone Dogs 28k hps (above our healer priest lol - note battle insight comprised 25% of my healing, so Glyph of Insight providing effectively 7k hps raid healing for this fight)
Feng 23k hps
Spirit dude: 21k hps
Spirit Kings: 18k hps
Elegon: 28k hps

You're a bit below both hit and exp caps but not too far fortunately. Talents are fine. Gems are generally fine but I'd take a look at what you're doing with your serpents eyes and put them into the Mastery ones and then maybe a look at those Regal Wild Jades to something more... hit/exp/mastery-ish.

Other than that, looks fine.

Quick glance from me: nothing majorly amiss imo: slightly over hit cap, though quite a bit under expertise (can reforge/gem for more expertise). Talents i wouldnt pick Sanctified Wrath personally as im v muchly a fan of HA as an extra cd. Brewfest trinket isnt great - a mastery/dodge-on-use one would be much better. Also id put windsong on the weapon (try to get the ook sword) over the dodge proc thing. My 2 c

I did have Holy Avenger for tanking until a few days ago, I'll probably spec back into it. I only went Sanctified Wrath for the extra 20% healing taken (could be 25%?)

Personally I got to say that I love having SW over HA.

The times I use HA is when I need defensive CDs every 2 minutes instead of every 3, but on almost every fight I use SW.
Being haste builded, the lowered CD on Judgement gives me 100% uptime on SotR for 30 seconds, whilst HA only gives for 18 seconds. Given, HA got 2 min cd and Wings 3. The damage increase is quite comparable from both. The game breaker is the 20% increased healing taken from SW which in my opinion puts it ahead of SW on almost every fight.

if you only are having sotr buff for only the HA duration you aren't using it properly, you can easily get another 10-15 seconds of sotr after HA falls off

Well ofc, not like I stop using SotR after HA or HW, not what I meant. But ofc, that also applies for HW, so see no difference here.

The main point is that HA falls off after 18 seconds and HW after 30 seconds and both leave you with 5 HoPo if used properly.

Why 30s? Wings last for 20s and that's when the CD on Judgment is lowered.... no?
